Recently, Space Jam: A New Legacy was released. I have not seen it. Even though I am a Millennial, I actually think the first Space Jam pretty much sucks. And I think Looney Tunes: Back in Action is good! Plus, I’ve heard A New Legacy is total garbage. People are even saying LeBron is bad in the film, perhaps worse than Michael Jordan. That’s saying something, and surprising, because LeBron has been OK in other stuff.
Given that, I wanted to make my weekend film recommendations all sports related. I’m going to recommend more than my usual three, in case you don’t have all the streaming services mentioned. Don’t expect any ‘90s kid nostalgia picks for me. I also think The Sandlot sucks too.
I do want to keep things somewhat light, so there won’t be any serious choices. As such, nothing like, say, I, Tonya. I’m going to open with A League of Their Own, a feel-good, fairly funny baseball movie. Tom Hanks and Geena Davis are so good in this film. It’s also a richer story than you might imagine. You can only stream it with Starz, but it’s only a couple bucks to rent it on Amazon or whatever.

You know what movie is completely dumb? Happy Gilmore. It’s also the best Adam Sandler comedy. The plot has more coherence than Billy Madison but his films hadn’t gotten lazy yet. Sandler plays a hockey player turn golfer. It’s very much a Sandler character, but I still dig Happy Gilmore. Watch it on HBO Max. Instead of the Space Jam sequel.
Breaking Away feels like a nice pairing with A League of Their Own. It’s a coming-of-age story that’s about cycling, but also really just about the people of a small college town. Again, you’ll pretty much have to rent it, but if you are willing to spend money on movies, A League of Their Own and Breaking Away is a one-two combo that should leave you feeling pretty good by the end of the night.
Now, a couple of late-night options. Goon is a raunchy comedy about a hockey player who finds his calling as a goon, which is to say a player whose job is primarily to fight people. It’s like Slap Shot but not as good, in part because Seann William Scott is no Paul Newman. However, this is perhaps Scott’s best performance in a movie. You can catch it on Amazon Prime, but you can also watch it with ads on Pluto TV, Tubi, and more.
This last one is an ironic-viewing option. Over the Top stars Sylvester Stallone and is about competitive arm wrestling. Need I say more? It’s on Amazon Prime as well, or you can even watch it free on YouTube with ads.
There are a lot of sports movies out there. Watch them instead of Space Jam: A New Legacy. Or even the original Space Jam. That one I have actually seen, so I can say firsthand it’s not good.
