All of us at one time or another has been affected by the scourge known as cancer; it’s a brutal and unforgiving disease that has ravaged the ranks of humanity. It’s an evil that can attack any one of us, regardless of race, religion or political leanings. One Academy Award winning actress is pushing back on cancer by throwing her lot in with an extremely worthy cause, according to our buddies over at The Hollywood Reporter.
Stand Up To Cancer is an annual fundraiser that is dedicated to eliminating this heartbreaking disease once and for all. Now in its seventh year, the good folk behind Stand Up To Cancer have enlisted A-List actress Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line, Wild) to executive produce this year’s telecast (set to air on August 21 across broadcast and streaming). Not one to just take an honorary production credit, Witherspoon is bringing along some star-studded friends to cohost this fundraiser in the form of Sofia Vergara, Anthony Anderson, Ken Jeong and his better-half Tran Ho. Together, these individuals will ask for our help on helping to stamp out cancer once and for all.
In a press release announcing her involvement in this year’s telecast fundraiser, Witherspoon said that “Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause in Canada. Unfortunately, too many of us have a personal experience with this disease. I’m proud to highlight the amazing doctors and scientists of Stand Up To Cancer who work tirelessly on important cancer research, innovative treatments and much needed patient care.”
Witherspoon’s husband Jim Toth – who is serving alongside his wife as co-executive producer of this year’s fundraiser – added a personal note in his own statement: “Having lost my father to this disease, it is a privilege for us to continue to support the important work of Stand Up To Cancer as co-producers of the telecast.”
The Stand Up To Cancer telethon will broadcast out of L.A. and will air at once on over sixty media platforms throughout Canada and America. ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox are all donating one full hour of simultaneous commercial-free prime time, which illustrates how important this fight is; it’s not one person’s struggle or fight – We all have a stake in this for a brighter tomorrow where cancer has gone the way of polio and other now-obscure diseases.
