A celebration of life service is often described as an alternative to a traditional funeral. In fact, it is probably more accurate to say that it is an alternative to a traditional funeral service. Most people who opt for a celebration of life service will be cremated and have a relatively modest funeral although there is nothing to stop you from holding this sort of service and opting for a burial instead. In the main, people hold them after the funeral has been conducted, either in place of a wake or a few days or weeks after the funeral.
Consequently, celebration of life services tend to be secular affairs with a less sombre tone than you would expect of a traditional funeral. The whole idea is not simply to mark the passing of the deceased but to celebrate his or her life. People will want to discuss their good memories, to point out things the deceased did that were positive and to thank them for the help they’ve offered or the inspiring things they’ve done.
Therefore, reading verses from the Bible may not always be considered appropriate at this sort of service. However, the Bible is often turned to at such a time even among non-believers or people who do not attend religious ceremonies regularly. Largely, this is because of the many verses which offer insight and wisdom that everyone can appreciate no matter what their most fundamental beliefs happen to be. There are many short bible verses people use everyday unaware that they come from the Bible. Of course, for people of faith, they can be especially comforting.
Which Bible verses are comforting to read at a celebration of life service? Here are some good examples.
- Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
