Hi Adelaide, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thanks for the invitation! We’re doing great! Even under the current circumstances – the summer gives us time to breathe and that is certainly a boost for our creativity!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Paintings In The Sky”?
“Paintings in the Sky” is a very important song for us because it’s the first track we release as the French-German project “Adélaide”, and the first track we have the opportunity to share on a large scale too.
It represents a lot of passionate work to turn a vision into a sound, and shape our ideas in a way we all liked. We couldn’t wait to put it out!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The song is not inspired by any event in particular but by an observation.
We wanted to find a metaphor for the hidden beauty around us and came up with this one (paintings in the sky) while walking down the streets of Berlin. It’s the idea that if you slow down, let go and look up a bit more, you’ll see these things you normally don’t see.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
At the moment we don’t. We released a lyric video with some NASA footage though, that should get you through till the next single, for which we plan to release a music video.
How was the recording and writing process?
Tanguy usually does the composition, arrangement and pre-production work. Then together with our producer Marcel Dadalto, who did an amazing work on production and mixing, we make decisions on the arrangement and sounds. The recording process was interesting, especially during lockdown: we couldn’t all be in one studio, so a lot was recorded separately. Vocals were recorded in a studio in France, drums in another studio in Brazil and some of it – like the bass – even at home. The advantage is that you have a lot of time for yourself to try out things and then use the perfect takes to add the unexpected.
What role does Berlin play in your music?
Berlin is a huge, busy and quirky city. There are so many inspiring people, places and odd encounters to draw from. At the same time these oddities let some people get lost a bit sometimes. Our tracks certainly reflect these features in some way, but we also try to make our music a “home” for people who are surrounded by a buzzing world; we’d love our music to be that unexpected quirky bar where you go when you want to be in good company or even just be yourself and have a great time – like those hidden gems you can find in Berlin.
How has AIR and Daft Punk influenced your writing?
They both managed to take sounds that stood the test of time – from the 70s, 80s – and convert them into something completely fresh. They took the best of the past and merged it with the best of the present, for example their superbe production. Air creates new, dreamy moods with this combination, and Daft Punk makes you dance while at the same time giving you a sincere feeling of nostalgia and otherworldliness.
We try to embrace that combination of once innovative sounds with now innovative production to make our listeners and ourselves dance and dream.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Absolutely! We have a lot of music in the pipeline and are excited to release our new material into the world. We’ll release a new single later this year and there’s more to come.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The next single will be named “Silent Hope”. It should be released in fall.
What else is happening next in Adelaide’s world?
Currently we’re busy preparing our next releases, but also designing our live set. Our music relies on setting moods, and turning that into a live show needs a lot of brain- and heart-power. We can’t wait to play live again!
