Does feeling blue add to your hair fall woes? I have terrible hair fall issues when I am stressed out. And when I am anxious, I get an upset stomach. My mental state drives me by the nose. Adding to the hormonal imbalances that most women get, dry eyes is a story of every day.
If you are depressed for a long time, your vision can get affected by it or vice versa. If you have bad eyesight, you are likely to get depressed.
Your eyes are one of the most crucial organs. You are dependent on your vision for most activities. With age, your vision starts deteriorating. By the time you hit 30, most women get anxious. You know the thirty and thriving goal. It feels like a deadline where you need to be somewhere. You want to be married or settled with a well-paying job. For some reason, if you are not, you feel the urgency. You start getting anxious and end up getting depressed.
By 40, your vision starts betraying you, adding more reason for you to feel blue.
How Does Depression Effect Your Vision?
Have you heard of the phrase rose-tinted lenses? I am talking about the metaphorical rose tints and not the glasses. When you are happy (or in love), you perceive everything positive. You see through your rose-tinted lenses.
But when you are sad, everything appears dull. You don’t seem to be able to see the contrast. It is mostly your brain that is perceiving it in that way. Your eyes are fine. Just the images interpreted by the cortical areas of the brain have contrast suppression.
You might have difficulty seeing in dimmer light or reading texts that have are in lighter shades. Tinted glasses or blue light glasses help in seeing with low contrast. These glasses may help in improving your vision.
How does Poor Eyesight Give You Depression?
Vision and mental state are interrelated. You see through your eyes, but the information is interpreted by your brain. When you are prescribed high power glasses, you feel as if you are given a crutch. You cannot do anything without them.
Eyeglasses can make you feel conscious about your look. You feel less confident about your looks.
If age is the cause for your glasses, then you might feel even more depressed. Your vision will serve as a constant reminder that your deadline is ticking, and many more problems will come your way.
And eye diseases further aggravate your already worsening depressive state. You start feeling anxious. You are stressed out as you need to adjust to your glasses. If you forget your glasses somewhere, you find the situation bothersome as you cannot see clearly at all. You keep bumping everywhere. It makes your mood worse. You also start withdrawing from society. When you don’t feel confident about your looks, you start avoiding social interaction.
If you are feeling any of this, you should consult a counsellor or talk with a friend. Don’t suffocate from within. Be brave and address your problems. They might appear big. But if you open up about it, this will go away.
How to improve your eyesight?
Do not stress because of your new prescription glasses. Ageing is a part of life, and glasses frames can come with it. Diseases are the unpleasant part. But take it as an opportunity to wear stylish designer glasses. Do you know Bono from the U2 band has glaucoma? He loves wearing his fashionable glasses. If you have seen those flamboyant and over-the-top glasses, you will know what I am talking about. Those glasses do not make him look like a heartthrob, but he likes wearing them. He is doing what he wants and giving off his fun-loving personality.
Don’t let other’s opinions drag you by the nose. They can have their opinion. Some might be worthy opinions and worth listening to, but most of them are useless. You choose what you want to wear. If you like big leopard-print glasses or any eccentric glasses, it is for you to decide. With confidence, you can rock the look.
And other things that you can do to improve your vision is –
- Go for a regular eye test once in two years. Getting a comprehensive eye test will be much better.
- Don’t look for recreation in phones. You can read books or go out and hang out with your friends. Join groups and do volunteer service. Or you can meet new people and make new friends.
- Make healthy lifestyle choices. It’s never too late to start again. Take Colonel Sanders, for example. If he can initiate a new business at his age, you can at least take a step to change your bad habits.
Take glasses as an opportunity and not a crutch. You can look much better than you actually are. You can hide your age lines with the glasses and make yourself even more charming. Try a cat-eye style of transparent glasses frames. These glasses will make you appear youthful and approachable.
