Wordsmith and a creatrix Perla Nalu knows heartbreak firsthand as she has suffered the loss of her child. In “Twilight Sleep ” her emotions rise as she brings her soulful and gut-wrenching experience to the table. The haunting lullaby swirls with dreamy synthesizer textures, meditative acoustic guitar, and vocals that are sensually emotive. The music’s ethereal quality is a powerful counterpoint to the raw feelings expressed by the lyrics.
Perla Nalu is a woman of extraordinary creative artistry. While she is a lawyer, she feels entangled by her own personal ethics. She uses music to fight for herself and others by exploring the ideas of power, saying “There is a message of empowerment and resilience here through exploring notions of power—cultural power, the corruption of power, and power as a prerogative in relationships. Ultimately, my story is about sustaining autonomy,”
Perla has actually written a book, which will be introduced through her upcoming release of singles where some songs are narratives, some snapshot scenes from the book, and some just evocatively capture the emotions of the saga. This is where we dig deep into a struggle of power and identity. “Music has been an integral part of helping me through many stages of my life,” Perla says. “It’s another layer of expression which captures the mood and story arc documented by the book.” For each track, Perla chose the vocal artist that most resonated with the protagonist at key moments in the story.
Her first single in her series of releases is “Twilight Sleep,” a dreamy, meditative, and ambient inspired song with poetic lyrics like “Your heartbeat echoes in my ears. Broken by the sound I’ll never hear.” It’s inspired by orchestral music, cinematic music, indie, and pop. She uses the acoustic guitar and a synthesizer textured with her soft and calming vocals, which is reminiscent of Lorde, Billie Eilish, or Halsey. It has a lullaby quality to it, giving a sense of vulnerability and rawness, perhaps a place in the story where the protagonist experiences love, liberation, or even lust.
The artist shares:”Turning my unthinkable tragic circumstances into a marriage between London Grammar’s eerie echos and Eric Clapton’s warmth in Tears in Heaven. “Twilight Sleep” was conceived whilst I was channeling the tsunami and the unheard voice of the mother within me. The thoughts flowed as I was curled up in the fetal position, hurting, healing, empowering at the same time. Shelley Segal’s ethereal voice breathes beauty into a mother’s soul. There is a silent dialogue of curiosity, yearning, protection and deep connection felt between a mother and her unborn baby. Though the loss is irreversible, hug your thoughts and emotions and stay close.”
The way Perla has used music is pure art. It’s one piece of a whole that you, the listener, must piece together yourself; she’s not going to tell you anything, the interpretation is up to the listener. It’s beautiful, sensitive and emotive. I am excited to hear what’s next. What else could this character experience? What else are they feeling? She has you coming back for more, and we want to.
