After the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was canceled by the Supreme Court, a lot has changed in the US. Under the PASPA, sports betting was banned in the United States staring 1992. However, the law established in 1992 did exempt four states from the roster. These states are Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana, where sports betting was previously allowed inside their borders.
Soon after its introduction, the state of New Jersey dared the lawfulness of PASPA. Starting in late 2017, the Supreme Court began witnessing oral arguments on the same. Later, on May 14, 2018, SCOTUS put forward their decision reversing the ban, striking PASPA down by a vote of 6-3.
Thanks to the SCOTUS’s decision, various states now permit legal sports betting, but that is only after they create and approve regulations. Of the already prevalent sports betting marketing, here are a few states and when they legalized sports betting.
- New Jersey – Launched on June 14.
- Mississippi – Introduced on August 1.
- West Virginia – Launched on August 30.
- Pennsylvania – Temporary regulations were established in June 2018.
- Rhode Island – Introduced in September 2019.
- Arizona – Legalized on April 15, 2021.
Delaware decided to take things a bit further by being the first to expand the market launching. On June 5, 2018, the final event took place when the state used its existing sports betting law on the books and established single-game wagering regulations. Furthermore, New Jersey brought its law into effect on June 11, officially beginning to accept wagers. Mississippi was the next to follow, taking bets since August 1.
