Shaquille O’Neal: Basketball legend; Sports analyst; Renaissance man. These accolades can readily be applied to one of the best ever centers in the history of basketball. Now, it looks as if the electronic music producer (yes, he does that, too) can add yet one more title to his ever-growing repertoire: Movie producer and screenwriter…
According to our Hoosier aficionados over at Variety, the 7 foot gentle giant friends call “Shaq” is set to dip his ample toe into the world of film with the upcoming animated short HeadNoise which he has co-written and will produce via his shingle Jersey Legends Productions.
So what exactly is HeadNoise and why should you clear your dance card to check it out? Excellent questions, both. Let’s start at the top, shall we? HeadNoise takes a gander at the insane pressure put upon people to succeed, as related to audiences through lifelong buddies Rashaun and Damon, a duo of very talented basketball players who hail from the same inner-city neighborhood. The two friends both covet a future in the N**, but – CONFLICT ALERT! – Rashaun is the apple of every recruiter’s eye, leaving Damon out in the cold. The twist here is that what Rashaun really wants to do is sculpt. Will he have the courage to follow his heart and dream, and what about Damon?
Mr. O’Neil is writing the script for HeadNoise with talented playwrite Donnie F. Wilson of Tearing Down Cabrini-Green fame, with Cedric Williams, Jr. and Joshua David King providing the vocals to bring Rashaun and Damon to life for audiences.
In a press release announcing the new endeavor, O’Neil said that “I’m so proud of HeadNoise. It is my first time writing and producing my own project. I wanted to call attention to what so many people encounter, especially young adults, who deal with anxiety and stress. It was such an honor to create this piece with such a diverse team of people. Everyone should see it.”
As to the second-half of my posed question above as to why everyone and their uncle should endeavor to check out HeadNoise: It’s a simple enough premise that does not just apply to 2021, but is rather quite timeless in its message about pursuing your dreams, regardless of what your own respective head noise might say. That’s reason enough in my book to find the time to show Shaq a little love at the box-office!
