Significance of Buddhist Statues for Homes

When you’re in the process of decorating your living space and are looking for items that are unique but also bring positive energy, consider the benefits of buying a Buddhist statue for your home.

Buddhist statues have become very common in households globally, as they are less related to religion and spirituality and more with maintaining the positive energy and aura in your home.

What Does Lord Buddha Represent?

Lord Buddha was an enlightened soul who sought to spread his lifestyle of peace and happiness amongst his followers. He preached about attaining peace and liberation through constant meditation, being moral and continual learning.

After his demise, there have been many statues; many are even national treasures that have depicted Buddha in different positions, where each form represents a unique aspect of his teaching.

What Does Buddhist Statues Mean for Your Home

Though there are many different types of Buddha statues, all of those represent only the below:

  • Peace
  • Prosperity
  • Good Luck
  • Tranquility and Harmony
  • Protection

Different postures can represent additional features and components, but Buddhist statues generally allow positive energy to flow and stay within your home.

The statues also come in a variety of sizes and materials. The most common types of Buddhist statues come in wood, brass, marble, wood, stone, and bronze. Depending on where it will go in your home, choose a Buddhist statue that can fit well within your space and is appropriate for the weather where you’re living.

Buddhist countries depict distinct aesthetics when it comes to Buddhist statues. Thai Buddhist statues are generally made from Thai brass and have a lot of ornamentation. Indian Buddhist statues are made from Indian brass, where the statue has larger eyes and increased focus on Buddha’s facial appearance.

Tibetan Buddhist statues are made from wood and copper. It also features intricate head ornaments on their statues, which are unique from their Indian and Thai counterparts.

Where to Place Buddhist Statues in Your Home

Everything has a specific place and direction, according to feng shui. Similarly, where you end up placing your Buddhist statue in your home can enhance or deter the effects of the statue.

In general, the placement of Buddhist statues and idols near the entrance of your home can ward negative energy away. If you feel like a specific area requires more positivity, such as a place you use for meditation or working, a Buddha statue would be well placed there too.

Buddha statues should not be placed directly on the floor, and you should try to put them at eye level as far as possible. Large electrical appliances should not be near the statue, as they can deter positive energy flow.

You should also never place a Buddhist statue in the laundry room, bathroom or storeroom as it is considered negative. Clean your statue regularly and make sure the statue faces the inside of the room (except when it’s placed at the entrance).

Different Types of Buddhist Statues

Different postures of a Buddhist statue have a particular significance for your home. The material of the idol is dependent upon your choice and the type of climate you live in.

The Praying Buddha is when Buddha is in a Lotus posture. Both his hands are folded as if praying. This should be placed in prayer or meditation areas, as they are supposed to enlighten you.

Laughing Buddha is also known as Happy or Prosperity Buddha and is a statue of a Chinese Buddhist monk. The fat monk was well known for the gifts he brought to children who were learning Dharma.

He represents happiness, good luck, and prosperity. This should be placed near the entrance of your home for maximum effectiveness.

Protection Buddha sits with his right hand raised and faced outwards, which represents a shielding gesture. He can be sitting or standing and offers you courage and protection from fear and negative energy.

Bhumisparsha Buddha (Calling the Earth to Witness Buddha) represents Buddha’s moment of enlightenment (Nirvana). It symbolizes how Buddha overcame temptation and summoned the Earth to bear witness to his moment of enlightenment.

This type of statue represents eternal knowledge and internal harmony, so it should be kept in a place of learning or meditation.

Bring a Buddhist Statue to Your Home for Prosperity

In certain countries like Thailand, there is a different Buddha for every day of the week. You can also buy a Buddha statue depending on the day you were born.

While it is great to buy a Buddha at a discounted price, as it represents that the Buddha is already bringing prosperity into your life, you should never bargain or haggle for a Buddha statue because it is considered bad luck and disrespectful.

Buying a Buddhist statue for your home means you are hoping for happy times and prosperity, not just in your living space but even in your life. Think carefully and decide on which Buddha statue is best suited to be placed in your home.
