INTERVIEW: Award-Winning Singer-Songwriter Lyia Meta

Hi Lyia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

BUSY!!!  Ever since the recent release of my new EP “15013”, I’ve been in a whirlwind of social media promotion and online radio promotion and interviews, and of course, creating my recent video to accompany the lead track of ‘15013’, “DAYLIGHT”, which was judged as a finalist of the Rome Music Video Awards! But a very good busy!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Daylight”?

“Daylight” is the lead track from my EP “15013”. Written and composed by Denise Dimin, a Los Angeles songwriter, it is a song about what was, wishing what could have been and knowing what cannot be. A deep and emotional song about truths and moving on.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Denise and I were discussing which of her songs would work as an EP; this song resonated with me on a deep and meaningful level. It is relatable to many of us who have experienced love and loss.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The video was shot while we were in lockdown here in Malaysia. Because going outdoors was disallowed, there weren’t many options to choose from! I shot the video in my living room using my mobile phone and edited it using basic software. The whole concept and mood I wanted was to create a sense of being caught in a loop where memories and emotions keep replaying themselves, and you can’t really get pass, even if you try to.

The single comes off your new EP 15013 – what’s the story behind the title?

Bob McGilpin, who co-produced the EP (and wrote the bonus track), was in Nashville, TN; and Denise, the songwriter of the other five tracks, was all the way in Los Angeles; and I was on the other side of the world in Malaysia. So, I named the EP after the hours that separated us: 15-hour time difference L.A. to me in Malaysia and 13 hours from Nashville to me in Malaysia, with Malaysia, being the nucleus—the project inception at zero! Despite the time difference, it often felt like we were in the same room, discussing music and the developments that each day brought.

How was the recording and writing process?

Bob McGilpin, who produced the EP, is amazing to work with. Intuitive and terribly talented, he played every instrument on all of the tracks.  But this couldn’t have happened without Denise’s compositions. As a songwriter myself, I found myself first drawn to her work through her lyrics, the story behind each of her songs, and how deeply I could relate to them.  I co-produced five of the six tracks, which are Denise’s.

What were some of the memories did you get to explore on this record?

I am a hopeless romantic at heart, so the memories of wishing what could have been and all of those unsettled feelings of “if only” came flooding back to me. I recaptured that longing for a time Iost; many things were left unsaid. A constant reminder of what could never be.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I found the inspiration from looking back on the life I’ve lived. The words in the song resonated to parts of the truths that make up the whole of my emotional journey.

What else is happening next in Lyia Meta’s world?

If all goes as planned, more music with Bob McGilpin, more music from Denise, as well as a few more other songs that are being demoed. So, if I’m lucky enough to have the stars in alignment again, another single and another EP! Wouldn’t that be amazing?
