INTERVIEW: Jack Drinker

Hi Jack, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi Vents! First of all, thank you so much for having me. I’ve been doing really well. As a small, independent artist it’s been a lot of work promoting my new single, but it’s what I love doing. I knew with this release that I wanted to broaden my reach, especially because I believe in this song and the message that it encompasses. It’s been a very busy past few weeks but I’ve also made sure to give myself time to relax and enjoy the moment.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Who Is This Person”?

Of course! “Who Is This Person?” is a song about my personal mental health struggles. As much as it’s a sad song, it’s also meant to be empowering. Life is not just one note. You’re never going to feel a single emotion for too long, whether it’s a positive emotion or a negative one. Being in a completely different headspace now, I listen back to this song and it gives me strength. That’s the beauty of songwriting, it not only tells a story but it can be extremely healing for both the storyteller AND the listener.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

2020 as a whole was a very difficult time for me in my personal life. Aside from the pandemic I went through a breakup at the beginning of the year and was also struggling with where I was going to transfer to college. I felt very out of control and helpless in a lot of aspects of my life. It was definitely the darkest place I’ve ever been in and luckily my family was extremely supportive. I told myself to start writing about all of the feelings I was experiencing and when I felt healed enough, I could execute the lyrics into songs which is what I did.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes, a few actually! Firstly, I’m planning on releasing a performance video with an acoustic version of the song and a new vocal. The visual for that is going to be pretty simple but very

fitting to the song. I’m also releasing my debut music video in late August which I’m so excited about. It’s definitely going to be my favorite thing I’ve ever done. I want it to provide a new meaning to the song while also showing more sides of myself. It focuses on the dichotomy of happy and sad, light and dark. There are definitely hints of American Horror Story but also moments of comedy throughout. It’s important to me to also express the side of me that’s funny and light-hearted. Definitely look out for that in late August!

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was pretty natural. It was different in the way that I wrote it in multiple parts. I usually write all my songs in one day but “Who I This Person?” was written over a span of a couple months. I wrote the chorus in October 2020 but never liked any of the verses I wrote. I then went back to it in January and finished the verses really quickly. It sort of just poured out. The recording process was emotionally challenging but also the most gratifying recording process I’ve experienced thus far. My producer, Steve Ornest, and I really took our time with it. We would play with certain ideas and then listen to the song for a week and then go back in and change anything we didn’t like. Nothing about the process was rushed or sloppy.

What role does LA play in your music?

LA definitely plays a prominent role in a lot of my writing. I was born and raised here so it’s all I really know. Specifically in this song I would say LA’s atmosphere can very much contribute to my loneliness. I recently wrote a song and one of the lines is “4 million people in LA can anyone hear me? I’ve got so much to say but nobody is near me when I need a friend the most”. That song is just about feeling lonely even when you’re surrounded by people. I think a lot of people that struggle with depression are hard on themselves for feeling sad even when they have a very large support system and I can sometimes fall into that trap.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, it does! I’ve spent a long time developing a cohesive first project and although not all of the songs are finished yet, the vision is strong. My EP will focus on many of the different challenges I’ve faced over the past couple of years whether it’s self image, love, friendships, etc. All of the songs will be different with one common theme among all of them. The whole project will be indie pop although there are definitely influences of pop punk and r&b. “Who Is This Person?” is the first single off of the EP.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

As far as a release date for the EP, realistically either the end of this year or beginning of 2022. I do want to release another single before it comes out though! Also, I have a working title for the project but I won’t say it yet just because it’s not set in stone. 🙂

What else is happening next in Jack Drinker’s world?

Well, I’m a full time Music student at UCLA so I’m gearing up to move to Westwood and continue my studies in the Fall. As I said, I’m planning on releasing another single before the EP comes out so I’m going to be working on that. I also really want to play some live shows ASAP but I’d rather wait until I have a small project out that I’m really proud of!
