INTERVIEW: The Famous Daxx

Hi Daxx, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been good! Recording music and chilling with my cat, also enjoying the weather and the pubs haha.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Gamble”?

Gamble is the oldest of my songs, I wrote it when I was around 19 or 20 I think… It has had many different shapes, I played it on my acoustic guitar in my early singer songwriter days, then it had a make-over in my grunge band and now it’s this retro-Tarantino-Spaghetti-Western track. The guitar solo is the first I ever wrote and I am really proud of it!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I can remember that at the time I was very much wondering what the future holds, everything was moving so fast and I experienced so many new things, but also there was so much uncertainty. I was quite a gloomy teenager, so I think the song really encapsulated that.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Not at this point.

How was the recording and writing process?

I have lived with this song for over 5 years now so it has been quite a process. I think the most interesting thing was for me, how much my perspective changed through the years, and especially through the year of recording. I thought it was just a gloomy song about not knowing what the future holds, but while recording the final vocal I realized how stuck I was in my early 20s, and how that is what I see now in Gamble, the feeling of being stuck and pondering the risk of changing things.

The recording mostly took place in a small studio in Wood Green, my partner Lucas Polo from the band Longlight produced all my songs so it was mostly a year of sitting in this small room full of Russian synths every week and making our way through the song. All the guitars, synths and vocals were recorded there. It was really important to me that all the session musicians that play on the track are female, just because there are still not enough women in the music industry and I want to do my part by hiring them wherever I can.

What role does London play in your music?

I think London gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of people who take music very seriously, who have a mindset that inspires me to grow as a musician, but also it gave me the space I needed to find my own sound and style. I love the diversity and that there are always gigs going on. I think I became more myself since I live here, musically and personally.

Does the new single mean we can expect an album– how’s that coming along?

I am going to keep releasing singles for now, most of my songs have their own little universe and I am not quite sure yet how to put them all into one frame…

What else is happening next in The Famous Daxx’s world?

I am working to finish two more songs that are going to be released this year, and then I will look into gigging again. I am taking my time tho, I want to find a really good band of female musicians to play with, and right now I enjoy recording and writing so much that I’m not in a big rush.
