And speaking of going a long way – ever wonder which car lasts longer?  Will it be your regular gas-powered car or your electric vehicle? Let’s find out!

Commercially available electric vehicles are relatively new compared to traditional cars, but there is good data out there to make for a positive case for them and will appeal to would be electric car buyers. For example, there are Tesla models that have been driven well over 300,000 miles and are still going strong. Compared to regular cars that have an internal combustion engine or ICE, electric vehicles have less components such as tail pipes, fuel lines and fuel tanks so it means less wear and tear. There are fewer components to change or repair, compared to that with a vehicle using a conventional gas engine. Having fewer components to repair means less or lower maintenance costs and can add more money back into your bank account for the long term.

Sounds good right? “But what about the batteries?” According to Consumer Reports, it estimates that the average EV battery has a lifespan of 200,000 miles which is about equal to 17 years of use if driven at 12,000 miles per year. Traditional car batteries, on the other hand, last about 3 years and it even depends on your battery’s brand, vehicle type, area’s climate, and your driving patterns. And if you take care of your ride, you can get at most 5 years of your battery’s life.

While batteries for both gas and EVs eventually need to be replaced, both types can be recycled. In the US, the lead-acid batteries used in ICE vehicles have a recycle rate of 98%. The newer batteries for electric vehicles, such as those made of lithium-ion, include even more valuable and recyclable metals and will have a life well beyond the vehicle. Also electric vehicle charging is now very fast and gives a long run to our vehicles so, you can go for a long drive with any problem.

Given the current data we have, we can argue that electric cars can last longer than gas cars. But it also boils down to proper maintenance for whatever type of vehicle you are or will be driving. This includes getting to really know your vehicle, doing a monthly check (or more) on your tires, examining belts and hoses, and for gas cars – change your oil and oil filter on schedule, inspect all other fluids and replace the air filter with oil changes. Don’t forget about the wiper blades too!

Electric vehicles also follow the basic principle but instead of oil changes, take really good care of your battery. Minimize exposure to extreme temperatures in storage and use, avoid fast charging and discharging, and follow your owners’ manual at all times.

The bottom line is – be it an EV or gas car – always take good care of your ride!
