INTERVIEW: Mike Walsh

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “RIDE”?

Yes, absolutely. I write in a very observative and cathartic way, I must go through it, so it feels genuine, and right. In “Ride” I explore my experience in the very disconnected and fast pace society in which we live in in this moment in time, in which people rely on ephemeral feelings and apps to fill the lonely void and try to fulfil the search for love. This song talks about this personal battle of finding myself, having to face this challenge and coping with these feelings of loneliness and void after my first relationship breakup and seeing that this illusorily chase of pleasure doesn’t help the path of knowing yourself.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, the breakup was the spark of inspiration, but I also see it from a third-party perspective and societal disconnect and loneliness fuels the narrative.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was very inspiring to work with my friends and family, who are all super creative and talented in their fields. It was great to work with 8 actresses that appear in the video and was very cool to feel a bit like a little movie star for a bit, which felt weirdly natural and easy going because of the professional team.

How was the recording and writing process?

I start all my songs normally on acoustic guitar or piano and write them on my own, at least the skeleton of them. I wrote “Ride” in the garden of my mom’s house in Madrid, Spain, I write a lot of my songs when I come to see my mom and family in Spain. I went back to London and got into the studio with my producer and co producer and finished of what today is “Ride”.

What role does Spain play in your music?

I feel at home when I go back to Spain, I have a lot of memories when I do, and this keeps me grounded and sparks the ideas and feels of a lot of the songs I write.

How has LANY and Troye Sivan influenced your writing?

I feel very inspired by artists that tell stories and life experiences in their writing… Troye Sivan and Paul Jason Klein the writer and lead singer from LANY are an example of this. Also, the sound choices and production style are a big inspiration to my sound.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, absolutely, there is a lot more and I am dying to share! “Ride” is my second single and the reaction to the debut single, PICKINGFIGHTS was amazing.  It’s exciting to be bringing out a new single so soon after it.

If so, any tentative release date or title in mind?

After the summer, starting in September will be non-stop surprises!

What else is happening next in Mike Walsh’s world?

Right know really focused on music and excited for what’s to come. Trying to connect with people that I know are out there, who can relate to my journey.
