Hold on Tight, “Dexter” Fanatics: John Lithgow Officially Signs On to Return to the Showtime Revival Series as Infamous Trinity Killer

Showtime’s series about a serial killer with a heart of gold – Dexter – was never better than when Michel C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan was matching wits in best cat and mouse style with John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer in that chilling Clyde Phillips produced and written fourth season. Taut, heart-wrenching and altogether masterful, that particular epoch of the show set a high-water mark that, try though it might (and it did, believe me), the remainder of the series could never quite live up to. Future appearances by Lithgow’s Arthur Mitchell in the final half of the show’s run were out of the question because – SPOILER! –he had been dispatched with much aplomb by Dexter, Miami’s favorite blood spatter analyst cum serial killer in that season’s devastating finale. Of course, like all good arch nemesis, the wake of destruction left behind by the Trinity Killer lived on long past the evil deeds themselves: Rita, Dexter’s loving wife, was left to die in a bathtub, their infant son looking on helplessly and mimicking Dexter’s own early childhood trauma of losing his own mother. This is something that colored the remainder of the series run, and rightfully so. And, according to our forensic hounds over at Deadline, that trauma will (pardon the expression) bleed over into the upcoming Showtime revival of Dexter not only in the abstract, but in the actual return of the most evil Big Bad in the show’s history. That’s right campers, John Lithgow has officially signed on for the upcoming season of Dexter, reprising the role that won him an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

So, how did the Trinity Killer escape justice? For fans who know Dexter and the show’s tropes (such as Dexter’s spectral father dispensing advice from beyond the grave in nearly every episode), the answer seems pretty obvious: Arthur Mitchell is getting a one night only revival thanks to the potent device of an active and guilt-ridden psyche from Dexter Morgan. According to word ‘round campfire, Lithgow’s appearance is short but bittersweet, with the actor apparently filming for one to two days in Los Angeles in the ten episode Dexter revival. Filming will take place within the next one-two weeks.

Season 9 of Dexter is set to premiere on Showtime in the Autumn of 2021; get those stress balls ready, Dear and Constant Readers: Methinks it’s going to be a wild and delightfully bumpy ride!
