WHAT IS KUBB?
As mentioned above, Kubb is known to be a traditional Viking game originating out of Sweden, also otherwise known as Viking Chess. This game is an outdoor lawn game that can be enjoyed by all ages but of course, the older you are the more competitive you can get when it comes to playing Kubb. However, the game is not limited to being played on grass and can also be enjoyed on concrete, sand, or even snow – depending on where you find yourself in the world. With similarities to chess, which is why it has been known as Viking Chess¸ Kubb certainly can be categorized as a strategy game but also simply a whole lot of fun for the whole family or a group of friends.
HOW TO PLAY KUBB
The game is made up of twenty-one wooden pieces, all divided into the following:
- Ten rectangular wooden Kubbs
- One large wooden King Kubb
- Six Round throwing batons and;
- Marking pins to designate your playing field
The aim or objective of the game, between two teams ranging of two to six players, is to knock down their opponents five Kubbs and thereafter to go for their King. To decide which team goes first, the two teams will throw one of the batons to try and get closest to the King without touching it. The team that gets closest will kick off the game first. For every Kubb which is knocked down, also known as the BASE Kubbs, they are then returned to the game on the opponent’s side as Field Kubbs. This cycle of base and field kubbs will continue until one of the teams has successfully knocked out all of the kubbs on their opponent’s side and then has knocked down the King Kubb, resulting in a win.
This certainly is a lot of fun to play amongst friends as well as even utilizing it as a team-building exercise with colleagues. A combination of strategy, coordination, and fun are applied in a game of Kubb.
