Hi Jesse, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been great! The new album is out. Interesting opportunities coming my way. The family is healthy. What more could I hope for?
Can you talk to us more about “On The Side Of The Road”?
It’s a song about life in general. I’ve seen a lot of things during my lifetime. Positives and negatives and I’m just trying to say that I wouldn’t trade it for anything…it’s still one of my favorites where you can win or lose everything. That makes this “ride” Interesting.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Everyday life. The ups and especially the downs.
The song is the focus track on your new album NOIR – what’s the story behind the title?
NOIR as a title represents the love instilled in me from day one that brought me to this point. If you look at my single covers, you are able to realize that there are different elementals at play. The first single ‘Stars In Your Eyes’ had the water element, ‘Counting Money On a Sunday’ represents air, ‘Smokestack’ fire and so on. So NOIR is the fifth element which is love. The love that keeps me going.
How was the recording and writing process?
I always want to keep these kind of things very organic. There are no specific rules to it. Sometimes I start off with the lyrics, sometimes with the melodies. So whatever comes comes.
What role does Viljakkala play in your music?
It’s a place that I grew up in so it defined a lot of things in me but it certainly isn’t everything I am but we all have to start somewhere.
What were some of the struggles and aspects of identity you get to explore on this record?
Love, depression, masculinity, my relationship with religion, friendships, loneliness, capitalism, racism and the dangers of going too fast while it’s exciting so a lot of different topics that I’ve seen very close.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Books, movies, daily conversations, lectures, music, relationships. Thera are no rules to this either. You just have to be willing to keep your heart, ears and eyes open and observe.
What else is happening next in Jesse Markin’s world?
Anything can happen and that makes this life worth experiencing.
