Todd Haynes directs movies that a lot of us like to see and that Hollywood goes out of its way to avoid making anymore. Thus it feels like nothing less than a miracle akin to the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series or the advent of a new Richard Linklater Before film when, manna-like from the heavens, a new Haynes film such as Carol, Far From Heaven or I’m Not There finds its way to our local movie houses. Not that every flick that the 60 year old auteur delivers to us is beyond reproach, but it’s enough in the eyes of this cineaste that, in a career that has spanned decades, Haynes is still out there swinging for the fences; if he doesn’t connect with every fast-ball thrown his way that’s alright. Half of life is just showing up and making an effort, something that Los Angeles native Haynes has been doing lo these many years. And speaking of the talented Mr. Haynes…
Per those Superstar aficionados over at Variety, two Oscar-minted actresses – Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman – have signed along the dotted line for director Todd Haynes’ latest film entitled May December.
May December is about an actress (Portman) who treks out to the idyllic wilds of the Maine coast to – in best method actor style – hang around with and observe the real-life woman (Moore) she is set to portray in an upcoming Hollywood movie. Upon arriving, the budding starlet discovers that all is not quite well in the former movie star’s existence; trouble is a-brewin’ in her household as her twin daughters prepare to head off to college. Timing is everything, apparently.
In a press release, Todd Haynes explained his own affinity for the script written by Samy Burch: “What so appealed to me about Samy Burch’s exceptional script was how it navigated potentially volatile subject matter with a kind of observational patience that allowed the characters in the story to be explored with uncommon subtlety.”
Filming on May December is set to begin in 2022 with production shingles UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance doing the heavy-lifting via the handling of domestic sales.
