INTERVIEW: Argentinian Composer Ben Cura

Hi Ben, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Happy to be here. Doing alright thank you. Happy to slowly see the light creep back into the entertainment industry and all of us involved in it.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single Toutes Les Couleurs?

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wanted to capture the sense of excitement and wonder, mixed with trepidation and slight danger, of being a young child in a new city and country, as was the case for me when I was 6 years old and had just moved to Paris. Toutes Les Couleurs (All of the Colours, in French) hopefully transmits some of that.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yeah, the video came out on the day of release of the single, which was May 21st. It’s available on VEVO.

How was the recording and writing process?

I was finishing my work on the film score for Among The Beasts, which is an upcoming film directed by Matthew Newton. I worked with Spitfire and Native Instruments VSTs, which allowed me to build a cinematic and orchestral soundscape from within my London studio, while mixing in more experimental electronic elements.

I then worked remotely with Denis Emery in Holland, for the mix and master of the tracks.

What role does Argentina play in your music?

If we’re talking musically, Argento (the next upcoming single after Toutes Les Couleurs) is inspired by Argentine Folkloric rhythms.

In terms of the E.P. itself, I framed it within a narrative – that of my upbringing across different countries around the world: I was born in Argentina (Track 1 “Nacimiento” and Track 2 “Argento”) later moved to Italy (Track 3 “Veronese”) after that I moved to Paris (Track 4 “Toutes Les Couleurs”) and eventually settled in London (Track 5 “Water” and Track 6 “Coda”).

Moving forwards, it remains to be seen. I draw inspiration, likely subconsciously, from various genres of music from all around the world.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind?

My third single, Argento, is coming out on June 25th, followed by the full E.P. Extended Play No.1, on July 30th.

What else is happening next in Ben Cura’s world?

Musically, I am working on new material, though too early to say more about that. The film for which I composed the soundtrack, Among The Beasts, should come out later in the year, so the soundtrack for that will hopefully be available sometime next year, in 2022.

I am also developing two projects, one a TV show, the other a feature film, both as a writer, which I have to keep close to my chest for now.

In terms of my acting work, I just wrapped filming on an experimental shortform project directed by Peter Hamblin of Hamblin Imagery, called I Lost My Energy, which should come out sometime this year. I have a handful of other acting projects lined up which I can’t talk about just yet…
