Top 10 Killer Mountains on Earth

The Himalayas offer a wide range of killer mountains which include some of the world’s tallest mountains. All the mountain ranges whether Himalayas or Karakoram, tend to hold mountains that seem to be the wonders of the world. But where are the 10 highest mountains in the world? Let’s have an insight into the tallest mountains in the world.

The Himalayas hold the honour of having the highest mountain in the world. Mount Everest.  Mount Everest is located in the northern hemisphere, the highest mountain in the world.

Most of us already know about the highest mountain Mount Everest, most of us will be familiar with the second-highest as well but what about the name and geography of the third highest? You might not know that I guess.

Let’s dig deep into the highest mountains in the world.

1- Mount Everest:

Mount Everest stands to be the tallest mountain in the world with an altitude of 8,848m. Located in the northern hemisphere, south of Asia. Tibet and Nepal hold the honour to be the home of the highest mountain in the world. Mount Everest is one of the seven wonders of the world and offers an amazeballs scenic view.

The first ones to surpass the tallest mountain in the world were Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.  Mount Everest has been under the influence of the local tourists and has been under a lot of scrutiny recently. Humans tend towards mountains like the moth towards the flame, so the tourist influx needed to be controlled to preserve the beauty of the mighty Everest.

In an expedition in 1924 two mountaineers, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, went missing before reaching the summit of the mighty Mount Everest. Afterward, George Mallory’s body was found at 26,000 feet, Irvine still goes missing.

2- K-2

After Mount Everest, K-2 is the second highest mountain in the world located in Pakistan/China. K-2 sits up at 8,611m and is considered the deadliest and the steepest mountain in the world. Located in the Karakoram range the mountain is known as the Savage Mountain well, that name goes by with the deadly nature of this mountain.

K-2 has been summited by numerous mountaineers but has not been summited yet in the winters until this year following a sad incident in which two mountaineers from Pakistan

3- Kangchenjunga:

K-2 and Everest sound familiar to everyone but a few people know about the third highest mountain in the world. With an altitude of 8586m, Kangchenjunga is one of the tallest mountains in the world. Located in the Himalayas. The Himalayas stand to be the home of Kangchenjunga too. Until 1852 it was considered the highest mountain in the world. Later on after the trigonometrical surveys it was found that Kangchenjunga stands at 3rd after Everest and K-2.

4- Lhotse:

Neglected like the middle child Lhotse has the most scenic and beautiful view to offer. Lhotse’s middle was considered the highest unclimbed point of the world until a Russian expedition climbed in 2011.

With an elevation of 8,516m, mount Lhotse has to offer a more defined view and is considered prettier than Everest but is quiet as Everest gets most of the attention. the route to both of the mountains Everest and Lhotse is the same until the mountaineers detach their paths from the third camp. 

5- Makalu:

The Himalayas outshine as it is the home to three of the four 8000m peaks in the world. Makalu is one of those mountains. Located in Nepal, Makalu has an altitude of 8481m and has two noticeable peaks Kangchungtse, and Makalu 2. Makalu was first summited by a French expedition whose leader was a famous mountaineer, Jean Franco in 1955.

6- Mount Cho Oyo:

With an elevation of 8201m Mount Cho Oyo stands tall to be the sixth highest mountain in the world. Offering a jaw-dropping scenic view Cho Oyo is known to be the easiest of all the 8000m peaks. Located at the China-Nepal border in Nepal. Cho Oyo means turquoise goddess in Tibetan. Australian mountaineer Joseph Joechler was the first one to summit Cho Oyo in 1954.

7- Dhaulagiri

The exact coordinates being 28’41’48’ N Latitude and 83’29’42’ E Longitude, Mount Dhaulagiri is situated in Nepal. With a height of 8,167m, Dhauligiri is the seventh-highest peak in the world. Located in the north of central Nepal, Dhauligiri means Dazzling white beautiful mountains originating from the Sanskrit word Dhawala.

8- Manaslu peak:

Ascending to a height of 8,163m, Manasalu peak is the eighth highest peak in the world. Located in the Manisiri Himal. A part of the Nepalese Himalayas, Manaslu is said to be the Japanese mountains as Everest is considered to be the British mountain. Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu from Japan were the first ones to climb the Manaslu peak. This is considered to be the first peak to climb for the ones looking to climb an 800+ ft peak.

9Nanga Parbat:

Known as the killer mountain, Nanga Parbat stands tall to be the ninth highest peak in the world. Considered as the most dangerous mountain after K-2 to summit, Nanga Parbat is located at the southern bank of the Indus River with an elevation of 8,126m. With its irregular patterns and a hard trekking course, Nanga Parbat is one of the most dangerous 8000+ ft mountains to climb. Australian mountaineer Hermann Bahl was the first one to summit Nanga Parbat back in 1953.

10- Mount Annapurna:

The Annapurna massif is a series of peaks, the highest of which is known as Annapurna 1, which are considered one of the most dangerous mountains to the summit with a fatality rate of about forty-five percent. The exact coordinates of Mount Annapurna are 28°35’45” N 83°49’20” E.
