June is Pride Month and what better way to celebrate the freedom to love and be one’s authentic self is the exuberant and uplifting dance/pop track “Rebuild” from Maggie Szabo. The Canadian-born, now based in Los Angeles rising star cements her message of love and self-acceptance with powerful lyrics and a modern, addictive beat. Soaring harmonies and the confidence of an artist that imbues love and light to her audience, Szabo feels unstoppable in “Rebuild”.
“Rebuild” includes Szabo’s bluesy-soulful vocals. I’m more beautiful after all the pain, she sings. One can imagine when she sings this line, her eyes are open, she’s emerging from darkness into the light. Szabo transported me to a place of vulnerability, and she almost seems to say between the lyrics, that it’s okay to feel like you took many steps to get where you are today, but that step meant something. The lyrics take broad strokes and are never precisely about something, but with her vocal prowess and the movement in the music bed, it feels empowering. She feeds the listeners’ soul.
I will rebuild…the only thing I know how to do, Szabo continues. I loved how she makes the statement that it’s what she knows what to do, as if she’s been cut down time-and-time-again. Perhaps this is so poignant because whatever battles we face in relationships, family or careers, we put on masks. Sometimes we want to just take off that mask and give up. “Rebuild”, with its triumphant beat and dance-hearty rhythm, has the makings to make anyone feel inspired to start anew. Whether it’s your first time rebuilding, or your 80th time, this song gives the listener the surety to feel like what works for them is all that matters.
Szabo echoes so much, with subtly. This song feels fast, not because of the tempo, but because she fills the heart so quickly. She has one of those voices that just makes you stop what you’re doing and listen. There’s a certain aura she carriers herself with – and her voice feels perfectly at home hovering over a gripping electronic music bed. Given the chance, I can easily see this song making its way into a movie montage, or even the dance floor this summer. I think we can all attest to wanting to rebuild in 2021.
Szabo is a sought after vocalists, especially among DJs. Her work has been placed on networks like E! Disney, NBC, Netflix and more. Among her accomplishments, Szabo has over 20 million Spotify streams. “Rebuild” follows the dreamy “Sail Away”. She’s also planning on a companion music video for “Rebuild” to hit very soon. The storyline features real life photographs and emotional imagery of Dr. Kathryn Davis, who transitioned at age 70. Szabo’s beautiful song and collaboration with director Alexa Best, who identifies as a trans woman, is remarkable. It was also the second time Szabo was able to connect with Davis – the two previously met in 2017 when Szabo performed her song “Don’t Give Up” at multiple Pride events. Davis, a founding member of the Trans Chorus of LA, performed with Szabo at LA Pride.
