SINGLE REVIEW: About A Boy by Crystal McGrath

Crystal McGrath has just released About A Boy. The new single is the follow-up to her hugely successful track Game On, which first hit the airwaves on Sirius XM CBC Country Top 40. The track was added to Australia’s Commercial Country radio network rotations and its accompanying music video circulated the Australian MTV/CMT network. The musician, activist, podcast host, and inspirational influencer has performed worldwide, including shows in Canada, the USA, Mexico, the UK, and up and down the east coast of Australia. She has shared the stage with Canadian country heavyweights George Canyon and Aaron Pritchett, to name a few. About A Boy brilliantly blends country with pop with a dash of guitar-driven rock, yet once again, it’s McGrath’s high-flying vocal performance that ropes us in. Beginning with a muted acoustic guitar part, the subdued verse and its two-part structure eventually leads to the chorus, which opens up to reveal a thoroughly engaging melody partnered with a lyric that sets out a series of questions that only give way to more questions. McGrath has said about her new release: ‘Like a chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream cone, the song blends two very different musical flavours into something that any music fan will enjoy. About a Boy tells the story of a confident girl who still longs for the connection from a relationship and finds herself distracted with the memories of her past.’ About A Boy captures all the irresistible sensibilities of hook-laden pop and blends them with a rousing country edge, emotional and uplifting yet continuing Crystal’s pattern of releasing tracks that embody the spirit of female empowerment. About A Boy is Crystal McGrath’s breakthrough release, an anthemic ode to the complexities of love and desire with a timely, universal question at its core one that will undoubtedly receive across the board radio and streaming playlist support.
