Hi Dakota, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been great! Just did a couple shows, and I’m feeling awesome.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Good For You”?
Yes. I’m super excited about this one. I feel like my sound has grown so much over the past year, and I’m excited for people to hear that.
We wrote this song in a flirtatious manner, when you know that you’d be good with someone, but you’re not sure they feel the same. The dating world is so weird these days, we figured we’d write something fun and light.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I started thinking about how hard it is to date nowadays — many people are closed off, bad at communication — and you can never get a read on the situation. I’ve heard all too many stories from friends about how they know if [said love interest] just gave them a chance, they know they could be good for them.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
We’re thinking about releasing a video once the song has been out for a while. I have a couple ideas, but you’ll have to just wait to see!
How was the recording and writing process?
The song has taken 18 months to perfect. If you heard the original version, you would think it was a completely different artist. I really took the time (especially because it was during quarantine) to make sure each sound and each vocal was exactly how I wanted it to show up.
What role does New York play in your music?
I am constantly inspired by New York and how it has raised me. I view myself and fellow New Yorkers as confident and honest to a default, and I think it has done well writing music from that perspective.
What is it about the Motown sound that you enjoy?
The live instrumentation was always what drew me in as a kid, but recently I’ve learned to love it all over again for the way Motown artists perform. They just get up there and serenade their audience; it’s largely inspiring to me, especially in this digital age.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
You can ABSOLUTELY expect new material. Not only do I have an EP in the works, but I am constantly writing. And like it was with “Good For You”, each song has taken a while due to me
trying to perfect every inch of it (as much as I can, I mean, nothing is ever perfect).
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’ve always thought titling my first project as something that resonates with who I am as a person… like “honest” or something. We’re thinking early Fall is the best time to release a full project and let the singles sit all summer.
What else is happening next in Dakota Ryley’s world?
A TON of on-stage time. I just wanna get out there and sing to the people — it’s my happy place.
You guys are the bomb! Thanks so much for doing this 🙂 – DR
