INTERVIEW: Zola Simone

Hi Zola, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great, thanks for having me and the support for “Iridescent.”

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Iridescent”?

“Iridescent” was the fastest song I’ve ever written, the whole thing was sort of miraculous. As a writer, inspiration can strike at really random times or for no real reason at all, this was definitely one of those times.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This song is definitely fictional compared to my other songs which are mostly from first hand experiences, the concept of “Iridescent” was sort of just a prompt I came up with and ran with. Friends with benefits, where one party wants to be more than that. It’s an interesting dynamic to write about.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

I do have plans to release a video! It’s definitely a step up from the last one and is very visually appealing, I had so much fun shooting it and a lot of hard work went into creating it- I’m so excited for it to come out, so keep your eyes peeled.

The single comes off your new album Now You See Me – what’s the story behind the title?

Now You See Me is sort of a sequel to In Plain Sight, the EP I put out freshman year. Both are about being seen and heard but the difference between the two is about perspective. When I wrote In Plain Sight I was at a point in my life where I was frustrated I wasn’t being seen and listened to by the majority of people, on the contrary Now You See Me is saying, here I am whether you like it or not– I don’t care what you think of me- this is who I am. I’m not seeking people’s approval, especially those who don’t deserve it.

What role does Cambridge, MA play in your music?

Boston is such a great place– I’ve lived here almost my whole life, thanks to connections I’ve made along the way especially in the hip-hop scene I’ve connected with a lot of great people. There are also great performance opportunities, and so many great concerts to watch. That culture and those connections I’ve made definitely made me the artist I am today.

What else is happening next in Zola Simone’s world?

I have one more single coming out before this album drops- it’s very different and very special and may just be my favorite so far. I have some super exciting things that I can’t share yet, but big things are coming, and I’m thrilled to have all of y’all along for the ride.
