That’s My Story, the sophomore release from Rhode Island-based anthemic rock group Molly Maguires, melds honest, heartfelt lyricism, brash songwriting, and a healthy dose of New England grit into symphonic garage masterpiece. Drawing from the genre-agnostic aesthetic of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, That’s My Story is bold in its diversity; the record nods to raucous brawlers, country twang and folk traditionals, brassy ballads and drinking songs. Yet, thanks to the deft touch of the artists that crafted it, the record stands as cohesive whole.
That’s My Story was tracked at Big Nice Studio, in Lincoln, RI. Proprietor Bradford Krieger of Big Nice co-produced with Sorensen, as he did on their first record. “Brad and I have developed into a super effective “odd couple” of a production team” tells Sorensen. “I have absolutely zero skillset on the sound engineering side, having engineer that I can trust is essential to my ability to make records. He also knows how and when to stay out of the way. He lets us make our music. He knows exactly when and where he needs to steer the ship. There is never any question about who is doing what, it just falls right into place.”
Influenced by a deep dive into the rock canon Sorensen took while isolating in South Carolina from March thru July of 2020, That’s My Story captures the feeling of riding a sonic and emotional roller coaster that was a hallmark of those halcyon days. “I admire the boldness and diversity of those great records” says Sorensen. “The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young; they made these records that were all over the place, but they worked. A lot of the great modern bands just don’t make records like that anymore. They might experiment in style record to record but rarely within the same record.”
Today’s we are pleased to premiere the title track of this incredible new record. The song captures the entire essence of the album in almost a nutshell, you get to hear the grittiness on every riff that gets amped up by the raw vocals.
About the song, JJ comments “”That’s My Story” is a song that I first wrote in college around the same time that I wrote the songs for the first record, but it was so radically stylistically different from the other Public Enemies songs it was never a track I really even considered attempting to work into that narrative, so it was set aside from that batch from the get-go. Once the songs we were going to record for Public Enemies became clear “That’s My Story” by default became the working title I had for a second record and I always had it in mind to make this a lead/title track and build something up and around it for our second record. I am a huge fan of blues and blues rock so I wanted to have something more bluesy waiting for the second project. So while the bones of “That’s My Story” date back over a decade, the finishing of the track was done in 2020 in preparation for and up and through the making of this record. I always envisioned a sort of Zeppelin-style instrumental jam in the song but I really didn’t want to get too caught up in writing that part so it could happen in a collaborative environment, so where the song went after the first two verses was something I sort of intentionally left as a blank canvas for finishing when we were prepping this record. Our drummer, Sean Scro, really stepped up and took the reins on that portion and he filled in the blanks of how we were going to structure the jam and he really did an amazing job completing the track.”
