Yeesh, just yesterday I was giving good ol’ Amazon Overlord -and eventual ruler of Earth and Space – Jeff Bezos the business over his corporate gobbling of Hollywood studio MGM. Someone must have heard of my apoplectic fit (was it you, Alexa?) and reported it, because this morning I was greeted with the news from our buddies at The Hollywood Reporter that Amazon Studios has commissioned a long overdue documentary on one of the better actors of the 1980s and 1990s, Val Kilmer. Alright, alright Jeff: Peace offering accepted.
Val Kilmer can count a plethora of awesome and intriguing films to his career resume: The man who would one day infamously don a Batman outfit for director Joel Schumacher is perhaps best known for such star-making turns in films like Top Gun, The Doors, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, True Romance and (my personal fave) Tombstone. That impressive body of work along with his private life will be studied and commented upon in an upcoming doc from filmmakers Leo Scott and Ting Poo entitled Val from production house A24 which Amazon Studios snatched up the U.S. and Latin America rights to the new film.
In a press release announcing Val, the man of the hour himself – Val Kilmer – said that “At least once a day for years I looked around and got this bittersweet feeling that there are a thousand reasons that this project could’ve been shipwrecked. I mean, what could a film look like of a man filming himself, sometimes daily, years at a time? It is unimaginable that this movie actually could’ve ever come to light without the partnership of my dear friends, Leo and Ting, and my producing partners.”
Buzz on Val is going strong, with word ‘round industry campfires that the doc may actually make its world premiere at the mucho vaunted Cannes Film Festival this very summer. For those not keeping score, snagging an invite to open your film at Cannes if you’re a filmmaker is the sports equivalent of winning the Super Bowl.
“Filmmakers Leo Scott and Ting Poo have a unique, cutting-edge style and artistry, weaving together never-before seen footage into a beautiful, raw story about this renowned and celebrated actor, artist and man,” said Amazon Studios head-honcho Jennifer Salke in a statement today. “We’re excited to work with Val and the A24 team on their first produced documentary feature and to share this unprecedented film with audiences.”
Amazon Studios plans on releasing Val this year in the U.S. and Latin America.
