INTERVIEW: Katy For Kings

Hi Katy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Thank you so much for having me. I’ve been great!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Impersonator”?

The imagery is simple and the storytelling is pretty straight to the point. I think it might be the most direct song I have out right now. I don’t want to assume but it feels like one of those songs where if people resonate with it, it’s probably for a reason.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Impersonator was originally written as a concept song. I didn’t think a lot of it at the time, I thought the hook was pretty catchy but it came together so quickly that it almost felt like it came together too quickly to be anything worth going back to. It’s only now, with my team pushing for it for months, and after having some experiences that reopened some old wounds, that I can take a step back and realise that it was coming from a place of insecurity that I hadn’t got round to acknowledging or taking responsibility for yet.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes! I made a music video with some of my favourite people ever. It’s cheesy as anything and I couldn’t love it more! It comes out next week.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was a bit of a blur, I don’t think I took a minute to really take it all in with this song. I listen back to it now and I struggle to hear anything other than someone who desperately needs to find a way to half understand and vocalise why she feels the way she does. I don’t think I stopped once I started writing this one. It felt a bit like word vomit, is that too much?

What was it like to work with John Fields and how did that relationship develop?

I met John through one of the members of my team. I was pretty starstruck at first because he had worked with all of my childhood favourites but we quickly discovered a mutual love for all things Joni Mitchell and now we call at least once a week with me tracking vocals in my bedroom.

How much did he get to influence the song?

The song was written in full when he heard it, but he made it come together as he always does.

As someone who has garnered popularity covering other people’s music – do you tend to take a different approach when paying rendition to another artist rather than working on your own original song?

I don’t think so! If I love a song and I want to cover it, there’s a good chance I wish I had written it so I approach it as if I had. Most of the time I opt for an acoustic version because that’s where I feel most comfortable. I put a lot of energy into my covers, but writing will always be my number one. I probably wouldn’t even know how to play guitar if I didn’t have that initial curiosity for writing new lyrics and figuring out structure.

How has Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift influenced your writing?

Taylor’s influence started very young, whereas Kacey’s is more recent. I’ve always loved country music so that’s how I originally came to know them butI think they’re both great examples of female artists who successfully shift genres whilst keeping their lyrics honest and their themes relatable.

What role does Essex play in your music?

It’s my home! I’ve been playing gigs here since I was 14 and I’ve met so many amazing, supportive people through the local music scene.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

There’s always new material! I write a lot quicker than I can release so I’m always itching to put out completely new songs but there’s often a back catalogue I still have to sort through. Luckily, music doesn’t have an expiry date but I’m definitely sitting on around 5 times the amount of songs I have out right now.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’m looking to start releasing every 6 weeks, but the industry and life is always changing. That’s the plan at least.

What else is happening next in Katy for Kings’ world?

That is a good question! I’m hoping to start gigging again at some point. I’d also love to collaborate with a few of my friends and just co-write with other artists as much as possible! I’m looking forward to seeing how much/what music I have out at the end of the year. It’s all plan, plan, plan right now!
