Hi Chris, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey VENTS! I have been great thanks, I’ve been very busy, but it’s been a very productive year so far. Lots of projects, lots of writing and plenty of time focusing on my socials, including TikTok which is a whole new way of interacting with fans so something that I’m happy to get myself stuck into.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Best Part”?
“Best Part” is a song that’s took some time to finish however I think the time was important for it, as I think at the initial point of writing it, I wasn’t too sure on what sound I was going for with the track and that’s something that can take some time to develop and I’m happy that the time was there so it could be nurtured further. The song itself I’d like to think is quite open in the hopes that people will hear it and take it in their own way but the message I want to send is that although times are tough, there is hope, and there are good things ahead.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I came out of a relationship that I wasn’t ready for which led to the foundations of the song being built, but I also wrote it about life in general. There will be opportunities to grow from something that didn’t quite go the way you wanted it to and writing “Best Part” was a chance for me to voice that to both myself and others who are going through similar things in their lives. It’s so easy to dwell on the past but it’s so much more fulfilling to focus on the future and learn from experiences rather than letting them drag you down.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote the song at home, and I was fortunate to be able to record the vocals at Real World Studios in Bath. I love writing, I’ve got to be in the right mindset for it of course, but I always have a really fulfilling feeling when I’ve finished writing something. It’s not easy and sometimes you really have to be more open with people then you’d sometimes even be with close friends, but it’s super beneficial and it’s a really nice way to deal with the hard times in life as it’s a positive way of closing a chapter and moving onto the next.
What role does Plymouth play in your music?
Plymouth is my home so it’s been important in shaping me and giving me the confidence to give music a go. I started out as someone who just wrote songs in their room and posted video clips on Youtube but Plymouth is where I first started to gig, play open mics, network and write with other artists and even have my first radio play. It really built my confidence, and it gave me that boost that I really needed.
With the large reception your music has gotten from your previous work – did you feel any pressure while working on this new song or rather the opposite?
I’m actually really excited about hearing peoples thoughts on the song. It’s different for sure. I’ve spent many years working as a collaborator with other artists working primarily inside the EDM scene as a topline songwriter and performer and “Best Part” is the start of something new and something I hope my supporters will get on board with. I’m a bit nervous and I think that’s okay but I’m not trying to recreate any of my past work, this is something that can stand on it’s own, so I didn’t feel any pressure about “Best Part”. I’ve enjoyed the entire experience.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Absolutely, I’ve spent a lot of time over the lockdown period writing with other artists and writers over Zoom. It’s a different way of doing it of course but I got stuck in and I’m really enjoying it. For the most part over the years, I’ve written alone so it’s nice to be able to learn and work with other writers for a change. It’s going great, I’ve got a load of songs lined up and more will be written between now and the next release for sure, so plenty to keep an ear out for.
What else is happening next in Chris Linton’s world?
I’ve got a few writing sessions lined up, one of them being with Gabrielle Aplin which I am looking forward to. Focusing on the next release as well as focusing on “Best Part” too.
