Final Season of Netflix Hit Series “Money Heist” Splits Into Two Volumes, Beginning September 3 and Concluding Three Months Later

The premise of the Alex Pina created hit Spanish Netflix show Money Heist is simple enough: Eight criminally minded individuals take hostages and wind up locking themselves in the Royal Mint of Spain. Amidst all of the drama and confusion (and yes, even a few laughs), a criminal cut of Machiavellian cloth works out an angle to manipulate the local police in order to carry out his master plan. Initially planned to be a limited series, Money Heist quickly endeared itself to critics and audiences alike, so much so that the original plan – to tell the story in two parts – quickly went by the wayside as Netflix and the fans demanded more story. Now, according to our Take the Money and Run pals over at Variety, the end is nigh for the popular series.

The end of Money Heist comes as no surprise to any self-respecting fan of the series that’s been keeping up with this intrepid band of thieves. Part five of the series has long been known to be the final act, but it’s how the show’s streaming service Netflix is choosing to unroll the last of it that is somewhat unique and original: Netflix will be presenting Money Heist as Part Five, Volume One on September 3 before concluding with its final drop of episodes – Part Five, Volume Two – on December 3. In all, there will be ten original episodes to send off the series in high style, indeed.

In a press release announcing the platform release of Part Five of Money Heist, Alex Pina said that “When we began to write Part 5 in the midst of the pandemic, we felt that we had to change what was expected from the ten-episode season and used every tool we could to create the sensation of a season finale or a series finale in the first volume itself. We decided to work in an extremely aggressive genre, putting The Gang on the ropes. In Volume 2, we focus more on the emotional situation of the characters. It is a journey across their sentimental map that connects us directly to their departure.”

An unlikely hit, Money Heist will be missed by those of us who dig not just high-octane action, but also from those of us that appreciate quiet character beats which the series more than specialized in.
