It’s May, which normally means warmer weather. It’s when summer starts. I’m a big fan of warm weather. I gut it through winters in Michigan waiting for the summers and the hot weather. Unfortunately, it’s been hard to come by so far this year, even into May. In fact, on Mother’s Day weekend the high didn’t even get over 50 degrees. I’ve been running my heat in May! That doesn’t normally happen.
This has gotten me dreaming of warm weather and looking for pop culture that puts me in mind of warmth. Of course, it doesn’t help that I’ve been bingeing Newhart recently, a show that is set in Vermont and often features wintery weather. That means setting it aside and trying to find some summer fun and hot weather through pop culture.
The Simpsons has done some summer-y episodes, but none of them are my favorite. Weirdly, the sitcom episode that screams summer to me the most is an episode of The Adventures of Pete & Pete. However, it’s really indebted to that feeling of summer vacation. It’s more emotionally evocative than just some summer fun. Weirdly, a lot of family-friendly cartoons have summer vibes, even just because of the colors. Like, Teen Titans Go! feels summer-y to me solely on its aesthetics. Then, of course, there is the show Phineas & Ferb, which technically takes place over a summer vacation but feels more like casual suburbia and not something that truly evokes warm weather a lot of the time.

You don’t want to go too far, though, and get into a heat wave like Do the Right Thing. Also, that movie is about complicated racial relations in the United States, so maybe not a good vibe to boost your spirits. Music, honestly, is maybe the best place to turn for what I’m looking for. Pop punk to me is a great soundtrack for warm weather. That might be all I need. Also, you know what’s a good option? Shows set in Los Angeles, especially ‘70s procedurals like The Rockford Files. That guy lives by the beach. It’s always sunny. Rockford is always in car chases and a lot of them are outside the congestion of the city.
Or, you know, I can just watch those summer episodes of Saved by the Bell where they work at a resort and Leah Remini is there. Sure, they are bad, like every Saved by the Bell episode, but it definitely will fill that warm weather void I have.
