Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us – things are good! Staying busy and creative, so no complaints!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Take My Money”?
This song is something I’ve been excited about since the fragment of the chorus popped into my head for the very first time. It’s challenged and surprised me during every stage of its creation, including after the song was complete and we were trying to figure out how to appropriately represent it visually as a music video – lots of stories there, but we’ll be sharing some ‘behind the scenes’ content in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that!
At its core, it’s a pop song as you can no doubt hear, but under the slightly vapid surface there’s a kind of ironic social commentary that’s oddly reminiscent of early punk rock – it’s just all packaged a little differently which, come to think of it, plays deeply into the irony.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
This is kind of an ‘everything and nothing’ answer. Our world is so dependent on connectivity – our devices seem to run our lives and it’s really tough 9more and more so it seems) to break out of that pattern. But at the same time as they’re enabling us to talk to each other, see each other, and be productive, they’re also constantly scraping our data, selling it, storing it, and using it to target us for companies to attempt to sell us things.
As an indie artist, you kinda need to learn a lot about marketing in order to give your music a shot at being heard. It’s always been a bit of an ‘eye-roll’ for me – like, it’s fascinating, but I wish we still lived in a world where art and music could gain a platform just for ‘being’ – that isn’t the case, so we do what we can, but learning about this topic opened my eyes to just how much we’re manipulated on a daily basis and, in the process the chorus for “Take My Money” just popped into my head and wouldn’t leave me alone.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes! We very carefully worked with Jaala and Mikey from TalkboyTV to create a really cool video to accompany the song…it’ll be out on May 19th!
How was the recording and writing process?
We’ve been looking back on this quite a bit recently as we’re sorting through and cutting together behind-the-scenes footage to share in the coming weeks. Honestly, it was exciting, challenging and has led to some cool new friendships and collaborations. I’ll leave it there for the moment, but link up with us on our socials and we’ll be sharing a ton of content about the making of this single and just how special it is to us. It was recorded and mixed before the pandemic, the video was created during and now we’re releasing it as we’re (hopefully) nearing the end, so looking back on the creation process it really feels like a different world, kinda surreal if I’m honest.
What role does LA play in your music?
Honestly apart from the fact that I originally moved here from a desire to pursue music not a whole lot directly. I pull a lot of inspiration from my own personal experiences and occasionally those of others, and I suppose you might say that, in a city like LA perhaps you see ‘more’ than in other places, but then again, you see surprising things everywhere if your eyes are open. So I don’t consider my writing to be particularly LA-centric, although certainly there are lots of great collaborators and studios out here, and a wonderful and vibrant creative community, so that always helps!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
Shhh…I like to be mysterious about these things, hah! …but what I will say is that we’ve been told (quite a lot, in fact) that we’re overdue to release an album, and we always like to listen to what folks are asking for! J
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I can’t commit to a date at the moment, I think a lot of things in our world are quite uncertain especially where the music industry is concerned, but what I will say is that this will likely not be the last single we release this year, and we are working on a much larger body of work at the moment – whether that becomes an album or several EPs remains to be seen, but I’ll say that we’re super excited about everything we’ve been creating…expect the bar to be raised with whatever comes next, and perhaps in quite an unexpected way!
What else is happening next in Ships Have Sailed’s world?
At the moment we’re focusing primarily on building momentum around this release – this is quite possibly the best song we’ve ever created, and we want to make sure we’re focused on bringing it to peoples’ ears and giving it the best chance possible to be heard. Simultaneously, we’re beginning to create and collect some additional content now that it’s safer to do so and really keep our ears to the ground within the industry to see how the dust begins to settle as our world tries its best to find a new normal. We miss playing shows and touring, and ideally we’d love to get that going again, but we also want to be cautious and the last thing we want to do is invite folks out into risky situations – so there’s a lot up in the air right now, and we’re doing our best to stay focused on the creative side, and of course, “Take My Money”.
