Yasmeen Al-Mazeedi, better known as Yas, has made her mark on the industry in more ways than one, with the Los Angeles based artist boasting an array of impeccable talents. Her latest release ‘for free’ is an introspective dark pop portrait of unrequited love, and the struggle of cutting ties with somebody who clings on too tight. The track’s broody ambience is fused with elegant piano melodies and delicate acoustics, with Yas’ soft falsetto striking against the dainty beat. Building a poignant crescendo throughout, the emotion is felt through her every word, as she battles between staying for the sake of it or sacrificing exhausted love for her own gain. The cinematic visuals depict Yas as an incubated creature in a laboratory, with scientists attempting to discover the origins of her species. One particular scientist becomes enamoured with her, and inserts a syringe into his skin that transforms him into one of her own, a metaphor for somebody that will do anything for love, and never put themselves first.
