“The Cleaning Lady” Receives a Series Order from Fox

No, The Cleaning Lady is not that long-awaited television multiversal team-up among Florence from The Jeffersons and Alice from The Brady Bunch (although, how cool would that be?) nor is it the title of my mother’s upcoming autobiography. Rather, according to our ever-reportin’ newshounds from The Hollywood Reporter, it’s all about those loveable and endearing and absolutely misunderstood wise-guys from the mob. Yeah, that mob.

As announced today from our uptown rivals, The Cleaning Lady received a series order from the home of Parker Lewis Can’t Lose and Beans Baxter, Fox. The upcoming mob drama which will feature Elodie Yung (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Defenders) is adapted from the hit Argentine series La Chica Que Limpia. The series has been on the backburner at Fox since being delayed last season due to the pandemic. The production picked up this past February when cast and crew finally converged to shoot it.

The Cleaning Lady is described by Fox as “a darkly aspirational character drama about a whip-smart doctor who comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her ailing son. But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she refuses to be beaten down and marginalized. Instead, she becomes a cleaning lady for the mob and starts playing the game by her own rules.” Yeah, that’s all good and fine, but riddle me this, Fox: Does she leave the gun and take the cannoli?

Directing and executive producing the pilot episode of The Cleaning Lady is Michael Offer of Homeland fame. The wordsmith who put that all-important first script together is Miranda Kwok (The 100) who, alongside showrunner Melissa Carter, also executive produces the series. Joining Elodie Yung in the cast are actors Adam Canto, Martha Millan and twins Sebastien and Valentino LaSalle, who will tagteam the role of Luca.

Scribe Miranda Kwok said earlier in the year about the production of the one hour show that “Being able to tell a story that emboldens and elevates marginalized voices and people is a dream-come true.”

The Cleaning Lady marks Fox’s fourth series order for the eagerly awaited 2021-22 television season, joining the greenlit trio of The Big Leap, Our Kind of People and This Country.

As a true aficionado of all things in pop culture having to do with the mob (in real life…meh, not so much so), I’ll put aside my bootleg Ken Wahl Wiseguy DVD box-set to check out The Cleaning Lady when it “hits” (woka-woka) Fox.
