Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! Thank you for having us. We are excited to be doing this interview with you! We have both been doing well 🙂
-Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Monday’s Facil”?
This one was a song that we have had for awhile and were just looking for the perfect opportunity to mess with it and put it out there. The lyrical base of the song is purely about letting go and the empowerment and peace found in standing alone, leaving it up to no one but yourself to find happiness. This is the first demo that we made while recording and writing Sequoia Moon so naturally we thought it’d be a good way to start with releasing songs off the album.
-Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I feel like I touched on several different moments and events in my life in this song. From a past relationship in my life, to disconnecting with close friends. These kinds of moments that often made me lose sleep, sometimes on a Sunday knowing I have to wake up for work in the morning, and dreading every moment while getting ready. Eventually as everyone’s kind of gone through at some point, you realize if you can just work on letting those things go, Mondays would be easy and start to feel a change and something new again.
The lyrics around being let go were inspired by my sister who kept getting laid off, and I think eventually she came to release that these jobs she was getting weren’t really what she was passionate about and just came to be another part of her story. Also the same sister who told me that I needed to work on “standing alone.” Something we both continually reminded each other and became the theme of the song.
-How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
It was a fun process overall! We used an old VHS camcorder that we have and kind of just filmed us doing our morning routines. Give our listeners a glimpse of what it’s like for Matt and I every morning when we meet up to write and record. We wanted it to be very carefree and fun!
-The single comes off your new album Sequoia Moon – what’s the story behind the title?
Sequoia Moon is a name of another song that we were going to put on the album but included as a bonus track. We attempted to come up with other album names but kept coming back to this one. I wrote this song “sequoia moon” about a trip I took to the redwoods several years ago.
-How was the recording and writing process?
This was the first time we actually ever did demos! We started writing lyrics and melody back in 2019 but a few of the songs were already written prior to that, so we kinda just included some of our old favorites while writing the new ones. We demoed and did what we call “decorate” or produced around May to June of 2020. Meanwhile we began opening conversation with Phil Ek about potentially making a record! We sent him our demos and then made a trip out to Seattle in October 202o and did the thing! Recording was great. This was the first time we worked with a producer and it was a very easy going and pleasant experience as nervous as we were.
-Austin is known for having a big local music scene. How has it influenced your own music?
Austin has a great music scene. It was fun starting here and playing all the local clubs and venues every weekend! The music scene here is very big but I would say that the indie scene here is very close knit! I think it has influenced us in a way maybe not sonically but helped us learn how to get ready for shows and performing live.
-What themes did you get to explore on this record?
Running away and trying to get back home again to something that may never be the same. Accepting that change, embracing it. Being mindful and present and learning to be alone. Allowing the people who truly love you take care of you. Hopeless romanticism and self love
-Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I think we gather our inspiration for our songs from things that have happened in our lives and translate it into a story through our lyrics. We also get inspired by dreams and thoughts of adventuring, traveling, and reminiscing.
-What else is happening next in Summer Salt’s world?
We are releasing our second full length album “Sequoia Moon” and it’s coming out June 25th! We have a tour coming up in the fall with our friends Covey and Breakup Shoes. We are excited to release our album and music videos! We are also very excited to see our fans again and share our music live on tour!
