When it comes to movies different people have different choices, few admire fiction, few indulge themselves in romance, few like action and few people are a fan of horror movies.

Most of us are a fan of horror movies. Yes, you heard it right. People like to watch horror movies. This the reason that the horror movie industry has seen a boost in production.

Even though horror movies are terrifying, upsetting or painful, still they have billions of fan-following.

Here, many questions would arise in mind. Why these movies are so famous among people aged 13-30? Why do people like to watch them despite knowing they are so disturbing or not so positive? Why would a sane person subject himself to scary events?

Well, there is the answer to every question. We, as human beings are so strong. Human nature revolves around exploring new and fascinating things. Few of us purposely bring adventure, fear and experiments into our lives.

Liking or disliking any genre of movie is a person’s personal choice. However, people who like horror movies are very emotional and thrilling.

While there’s not any one-size-fits-all answer but there can be some psychological factors listed below.

Horror movies have a big fan following. Many people enjoy watching scary movies with their loved ones.  For a few, it’s a wonderful bonding experience.

The relationship made during the stress is often more intense than the normal situations. Studies have shown the groups of young college-mates, who watched scary movies together built intense and ever-lasting memories. They remembered the person who was most scared of watching a creepy character in the movie.

  • People who watch horror movie can handle the stress differently;

It’s not wrong to say that many of us love to watch horror movies, because they can cause arousal in our body’s reaction to stress.

A fear-inducing movie can increase the heart rate of anyone and the body feels to expand energy.

Some people take the fear positively. They think that they are enjoying some intense yoga class or having an adventurous gym session.

Humans love the feeling of handling stress, they enjoy cope up with panic attacks.

  • Excitation transfer theory;

Some people enjoy the feeling of fulfilment they have after watching a horror movie. This is called Excitation transfer theory. This feeling intensifies certain psychological response.

For example, if you tried watching a scary movie with a group of friends and you enjoyed the experience. You will surely watch any horror movie again.

The excitation process triggers the psychological response of returning for more. Anyone who has watched some creepy characters in a movie will eventually want to watch more of them.

  • Curiosity makes you watch more horror movies;

“Curiosity kills the cat”. Well, Nah….its yesterday’s myth. People who are huge fan of horror movies are so curious.

It’s fun to watch scary things happening right before your eyes. A spectator can’t evaluate who is behind the petrifying situation. People keep themselves hooked to the movie till the end. Curiosity keeps the audience stick to their seats till the movie completes.

  • Horror movies cause a rush in Adrenaline;

Enjoying the high level of physiological arousal is fun for some people. According to Spark, “10% people enjoy adrenaline rush”. These people may indulge themselves in roller coasters or some intense gaming or even horror movies.

A horror movie- buff has the strength of coping with unwanted stimuli. They try to  prove  themselves brave and fearless.

  • Watching horror movies raises Novelty;

Many of us turn towards scary movies because of novelty. All of us always want to pay attention to the anomalies in our surroundings.

Any dangerous activity interrupts routine, curiosity about the change is an important factor for survival.

You don’t go through the scary events in real life. The scene of the gory accident or some bleeding fella, you don’t see every day.

There’s something else you don’t experience in real life is visual effects. Those pinching voices, the crash of thunder and howling  of winds in the wood can enhance your novelty.
