Peabody Awards Reveals Their Nominees for Outstanding Achievement across Broadcast and Streaming Media

The Peabody Awards turned 80 years old this year and I’m rather embarrassed to admit that from the time I could crawl about and waste copious brain cells on hours of ooey-gooey cartoon goodness up until I hit adolescence and traded in my Dukes of Hazard lunchbox for a Masters and Johnson course on how to woo the fairer sex (Note to Self: Never approach Masters and Johnson for advice on matters of the heart…) I firmly believed that this highly lauded institution was named after one Hector J. Peabody, A.K.A. Mister Peabody of Mr. Peabody & Sherman animation fame. Yeah, turns out that I was wrong about that….

The annual Peabody Awards were first handed out in March of 1941 in an effort to recognize some of the most impactful moments in radio and in the press for that specific year. These distinguished honors were named for respected American philanthropist George Peabody and have been a highly-regarded staple in the news and entertainment industries ever since. This institution has chugged along with nary a hiccup since those halcyon pre-Pearl Harbor/WWII days and continues up through today, even as the world of physical print media has gone the way of All-Flash (Sigh. End of editorial).

60 nominees were announced this Tuesday for the distinguished Peabody Awards (as reported by our friends at The Hollywood Reporter) and it felt only apropos for Vents to announce a few of the highlights as they pertain to our little pop culture corner from this year’s list of the chosen.

If you’re the type that likes to keep score, PBS dropped the mic on its distinguished competition and walked away with a grand total of 12 nominations. Netflix wasn’t too far behind with 9 nods, HBO with a total of 5, Amazon and Showtime tied with 3 nominations apiece and, rounding it out, Apple TV+ and CBS did a mean Watusi with 2 nominations each.

“During an incredibly turbulent and difficult year,” said the chair of the Peabody board of jurors Martha Nelson, “these nominees rose to the occasion and delivered compelling and powerful stories. From the COVID-19 coverage to poignant explorations of identity, each nominee not only told a powerful story but also made a significant impact on media programming and the cultural landscape. We’re thrilled to recognize their outstanding and inspiring work.”

The Peabody Award winners will be announced courtesy of a virtual event in June.
