Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Addicted”?
Addicted was recorded in Los Angeles with my friends Nick Henriques & Diamond Pistols. Addicted is about the way somebody can take over your entire brain & how good that serotonin feels.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I was coming out of an intense break up & in the beginning stages of falling in love again. I was pretty reckless for the first few months of being single. I found myself having more late nights, meeting new people & falling into old habits to help get me through the heartbreak. As a result a lot of the songs I wrote at the time were sad, nostalgic & emotional. It wasn’t until I met somebody that I really connected with that I found myself inspired again & in a good headspace to start writing positive music.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes, actually the video for Addicted was directed by Bobby Hanaford & is out now on YouTube! Bobby and I worked so well that he directed my second music video which will be dropping at the end of May.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process for Addicted was really quick. I had spent the last few days working with the same producer and we got into this flow where he would play me chords or loops & I would start writing. I started to think about what my last week was like, what my last couple days were like & what I was currently feeling. I began by jotting some words that come to me & recording voice notes of melodies that I heard. Once I had that started, I let the music help dictate the picture that I wanted to paint lyrically. And in this case, addicted was feeling like that warm rush of dopamine to the head when you start catching feelings for someone.
How does Greek and Jamaican roots influences your writing?
I definitely feel like my rhythms & cadences are influenced by my Jamaican heritage. My family actually started the genre Ska in Jamaica in 1964 with their hit “Oh Carolina”. I was about 18 when I learned that music was in my blood. My grandmother would play the piano for me which taught me how to play piano by ear. . Most of my family’s heritage grew up surrounded by music in Kingston, so I feel like being a writer & singer is in my DNA.
You’ve gotten to work with names such as Keith Urban and Backstreet Boys – what have you learned from these experiences?
Writing for other artists has taught me to never give up on a song. The Backstreet Boys song that I wrote was about 6 years old by the time it was released on their album. That taught me that every song is a chance to plant a seed & with the right artist at the right time that seed can grow into something fruitful. Writing for others also gives me an outlet for songs I really enjoy writing but that don’t fit for me as an artist.
Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
When I write songs to pitch to other artists I typically write as if I’m writing it for myself. Unless I’m working with a specific type of artist that is a writer as well, then it’s more collaborative based on their vision
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes. There is a new EP coming & I’m happy to say it is done! When the pandemic started, I wanted to put together an EP that captured what my life was like before, during & after the world shut down. To do that, I had to dive into myself & write about my break up, being single & falling in love again. It was an intense process but one I’m grateful I had the time & focus to really piece together the right way.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Next single will be releasing May 21st.
What else is happening next in Brandyn Brunette’s world?
Expect a few more singles & an official release date is this summer!
