Hi Cruz, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

What’s up everyone, thanks for having me. I’ve been great. This whole situation has obviously changed a crazy amount of my life being a touring DJ, but on the positive side I get more studio time and I appreciate many things from not having to travel, such as living a healthier lifestyle, getting more sleep and generally less stress.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Chaos”?

I haven’t released music in a while, as it didn’t feel right. Now it’s time and I’m very excited to drop CHAOS. It features Anoyd from Connecticut.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Most of my inspiration comes from my DJ gigs around the world. I try to translate the energy from the crowds on the dancefloors into my own music. While producing and arranging, I always have a packed club in mind. For one year now I’ve been missing this source of inspiration. My aim was to make a heavy hitting Hip Hop Track for people to turn up to and get crazy, even though Clubs and Festivals aren’t open yet.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

ANoyd and I would have definitely made a video for the release, but as I’m based in Switzerland, ANoyd in the US and traveling is so restricted – unfortunately it’s currently not possible.

How was the recording and writing process?

I produced a lot of Beats during lockdown in my Studio and sent a selection to ANoyd. I love the one he picked and he started to write and record in his home studio. Of course it’s more fun to link up in person and do the whole process together, those studio sessions are always so much fun, but right now it had to be done via FaceTime.

What was it like to work with Anoyd and how did that relationship develop?

I came across his music and checked him out. He’s a truly talented rapper, he has some crazy freestyles online and got crazy bars! I knew straight away I want to work with him and reached out on Instagram. We facetimed and vibed out – unfortunately we haven’t met in person yet.

How much did he get to influence the song?

To a big extent. After I sent him the beat, he took it from there, wrote fire lyrics, recorded it and gave it the title Chaos. I only had two minor inputs regarding the lyrics which he adapted. He killed it, I’m really proud of the outcome!

Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

Not really. When I’m in the studio I just produce what I think is hot and then see what the collaborator adds to it. Then we usually go back and forth, if it’s a match and we’re on the same vibe, great. If not, we work on another project. Working with someone in the studio is amazing as you can feed off each other’s creativity. Sometimes I’m working by myself and get stuck, then I lose my enthusiasm and might want to work on something else. That’s when its dope to have a collaborator around who steps in and has new ideas. Then boom, you’re back on track.

What role does Switzerland*** play in your music?

That’s where I’m born and raised, by a Swiss mother and American Father. I wouldn’t say it has played a big role in my music though, that inspiration really comes from what I’ve experienced while traveling to all my DJ gigs to places like NYC, South of France, London, Milan, Marrakesh, Singapore etc. My hometown Zurich is rather quiet, so that’s good to charge up before heading out to the next trip.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Absolutely! The follow up single is finished and I’m ready to drop it after Chaos. I’m also having some artists remix the tracks, something I truly love. Hearing what a producer makes out of my tune is always so exciting to me.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

NO KIZZY is the title for the follow up release. It’s a lighter track than Chaos, so perfect for summer. I’ll most likely drop it in June.

What else is happening next in DJ Cruz’s world?

There’s so much which has been going on and I’m grateful for all these opportunities which come my way in these times. I’m going to be the Artistic Director and one of the resident DJs at a new venue which is opening in Zurich. I’m also Head of Sounds at a Start-Up called ‘Lucky Punch’, a group boxing / full body work out experience with music. I also started a new Alias for electronic music and have around 10 finished tracks, which I’ll be releasing soon. And with my brand ‘Unashamed’ I’m planning events for the summer. A lot more is going on, but right now its full focus on CHAOS! Go check it out and let me know on Instagram @djcruz__ what you think of it!
