Streaming Service Tubi Set to Premiere Full Fox-Backed Schedule of Original Programming

The 21st Century phenomenon known as the streaming service continues its ROKU-led march towards world dominance with what feels like an announcement virtually every day regarding a new and highly touted “channel” (is that even a relative word anymore?). Said channel is usually met with all of the appropriate fanfare from media that at one point in time was strictly reserved for visiting Royalty or an Apollo space mission to the moon. And there is so much to choose from: Have a strange predilection for underwater basket weaving? How about a penchant for home ceramics? Chances are that there’s at least one streaming platform out there designed to scratch that itch of yours. In my household, our tastes run to classic television and film which means we’re well-serviced with streamers such as Classic Reel and Golden Age TV. Then there are those evenings when nothing less than a full-on cheese-fest disguised as a Zak Bagans paranormal reality show will sate our eclectic and varied tastes. And though Bagans and his perennial Ghost Adventures series doesn’t have its own featured platform, streaming permits our sweet tooth to be more than indulged with the entire vast library of his kooky things-that-go-bump- in- the- night series (24 seasons in all, the last time we counted) at our grubby little fingertips. Icing on the cake, too, is that most of these tawdry little gems can be viewed sans umpteen pharmaceutical commercials – Although that said, if you enjoy that aspect of your television watching experience I’m sure there’s a Kimberly-Clark or Proctor and Gamble Classic Commercial platform to satisfy even the biggest fan of Mr. Whipple (“Please, don’t squeeze the Charmin”) or good ol’ Madge (“You’re soaking in it!”). Hey, as I pointed out at the front of this diatribe, there’s something for everybody in the world of streaming…

Which – long-winded nerd that I am – leads us to the subject at hand this fine morning – The Hollywood Reporter has announced that the free streaming service known as Tubi has plans set in motion to premiere a full schedule of new programming this Autumn, some of which will be developed by its parent conglomerate, Fox Corp.

“What,” you might be asking at this moment, “does original programming on Tubi look like?” Well Happy Campers, you came to the right cliff-note peeking reporter, ‘cause I got some details for you that’s hot off the presses!

The upcoming (and initial) 140 hours of brand-spankin’ new content for Tubi will shine a spotlight on a few of the platforms well-received genres. Those wordsmiths at Tubi and Fox Corp are apparently referring to this as “pockets of passion”, but that term feels a little too icky and sticky to ye olde yellow journalist, so we’ll just call these popular shows on Tubi as, er, “popular shows”; How’s that grab you for originality?

At any rate, the new slew of original programming will include a focus on animated shows and original documentaries. Not to be left out in the proverbial cold, other genres that will receive some much needed attention on Tubi will range from romance, science fiction, thrillers and cinema devoted to telling new stories featuring African Americans.

In a press release right out of the New Age 21st Century Playbook, Fox Entertainment Big Wheel Charlie Collier said that “Tubi has the unique ability to understand its audience, their interests, their curiosities and their obsessions…That’s why Fox and Tubi together matter for you. We are simply building a new and better way to maximize advertising investment. Our future is together.”

So get those ROKU trigger fingers at the ready, all of you cable-cutters! Streaming has a new sheriff in town this coming fall…Its name (say it loud, say it proud): Tubi. You heard it here first (sort of), True Believers!
