Remember Sports’ ‘Like A Stone’ Is Far From Rock Solid

In 2015, a band called Sports released an album called All of Something. I loved it. It was great and made my top 10 albums of the year. Then, this band called Sports called it quits. They came and they went. Then, in 2018, they reemerged as Remember Sports, “Sports” having been a name used by another band as well. That band sucks. Remember Sports was back and I was excited. Their 2018 release Slow Buzz was quite good to the best I can remember. In truth my memory of it is fuzzy. I have listened to All of Something and Sunchokes over and over. My favorite songs have been on repeat. A few years later, Remember Sports is back again with Like a Stone, an album that…well, it’s not exactly going to pull me away from All of Something.

The sound of Like a Stone definitely feels like an evolution for Remember Sports, but it is into a direction I am not totally thrilled with. Album opener and single “Pinky Ring” feels like an indie band’s take on ‘90s alt rock, and while I was able to get into it that took a second. Remember Sports was a lo-fi indie rock band with raw energy and a sort of pureness in the early albums. Like a Stone is cleaner, richer, but also not as good to listen to. This is not the sound that Remember Sports excels in. I wasn’t rocking out. I wasn’t vibing. It felt like every song was me saying, “Yeah, that was good” and then moving on with a shrug. No song grabbed me and made me want to listen to it again immediately. Also, the song “Eggs” begins with a cringeworthy lyric straight out of a ‘90s poetry jam. Maybe Remember Sports took all the worst lessons from the early ‘90s for Like a Stone?

I was happy that Remember Sports came back in 2018, and to be fair I still am. They are hopefully happy making music. That being said, it feels like the band has been on a downward trajectory ever since. It could have burnt bright and burnt out, but instead the band is just kind of chugging along. Like a Stone is fine. That’s the best I can really say about it. A band that I really wanted to champion several years ago has became a band that engenders apathy from me.
