Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Like retired musicians (lol) waiting for gigs as soon as possible!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Keep Going”?

Keep going is an ode to the power of music. That of bringing together people and energies, to make it something transcendent and positive. In my opinion this is what people need just right now!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Joris : When I wrote these lyrics, I was studying music in Paris, and I remember listening all of the Phoenix albums on repeat at that time. The track evokes emotions I often felt through their music , when walking down the street with headphones. A feeling of lightness and total freedom.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Of course, the video will be released on May 20, 2021, be ready!

How was the recording and writing process?

On the future EP it was Joris the singer who wrote all the lyrics. He was also at the basis of some compositions, but most of the time it’s Dorian, guitarist who composes and Joris finds the melodies and the lyrics. Then we polish all that with the rest of the band to find the sound and balance.

For the recording we decided to do the best, calling Daniel Yvinec as producer. A guy who has already played with Maceo Parker, Salif Keita, Mark Murphy… and had a lot of experience as a producer (he was notably nominated for the Grammy Awards in 2011 for his work with the ONJ, the national orchestra of Jazz in France). It was the first time that we worked with a producer. It was a very enriching experience and it is clear that our EP would have had a completely different color without him. He helps us to keep the best, change some lyrics or song structure and find some “hooks”.

We discussed a lot with him upstream to define our music and where we wanted to go together, shared playlists, and ended up spending a weekend in the bassist’s parents’ basement in the countryside near Toulouse, where we rehearsed. We are also grateful to Romain Clisson, the sound engineer at Durango Studio in Paris, who made up the second half of the dream team and helped us to have a sound, a touch, the Flakes touch!

What role does France play in your music?

Joris: Regarding the text, I’m quite demanding with the lyrics that I’m looking for and I know that I inherited this from my French native language , because it’s a language which, for it to be beautiful and touching, must have some poetry in words and rhythm. That’s why, apart from Keep Going of course, which is a very light track, some tracks from the upcoming EP are quite mystical or poetic.

About music, we are of course all influenced by the French Touch, and bands like Daft Punk, Phoenix  or Electro Deluxe are sources of inspiration for us.

How has Parcels and Jamiroquai influenced your writing?

Joris: A lot of tracks like Overnight from Parcels influenced me to write our dance tracks, as for more “mystical” themes, I realized afterwards that I borrowed a lot of words from the lexical field of Jamiroquai like gravity, cosmic, ecstasy that we find notably in Cosmic Girl. They like the space theme (Cosmic Girl, Starchild, Space cowboy, Mr Moon, …) and it really speaks to me. Who hasn’t dreamed of exploring the unknown one day?

Dorian: I really enjoy composing the music for Flakes. I’m a big fan of disco-funk like Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic and Kool and the Gang. I grew up with Jamiroquai, the album “The return of the space cowboy” was my favorite album when I was a kid. I think all these influences as well as modern bands like Parcels or Jungle for example and also Daft Punk by using the vocoder with my guitar fed me to create the musical universe of Flakes. We want to make Pop music that meets Disco-Funk, Soul, Acid-jazz and Electro. FlaKes is an invitation to dance!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

The release of our first 5-track EP was scheduled for October 2020, but with the recent events we had to postpone it until one year later! To October 2021. It will be a digital release only, we intend to release the physical EP (CD and Vinyl) when concerts resume.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Our single Keep Going will be released on April 29, 2021, the EP in October whose title will of course be “Keep Going “, the future will tell us what happens next.

What else is happening next in Flakes’ world?

While waiting impatiently to be able to share our music with the public, we’re making costumes, preparing new pics for the EP cover, and maybe a live video? Would you like that?
