1. The best-selling toy

The Cube has been the best-selling toy since 1980, and approximately 400 million Rubik’s Cube have been sold since. It was the best-selling toy at Walmart in 2015 with $111 Million in retail sales. 

2. The first-ever solving solution

The ‘You Can Do the Cube’ was the first-ever Cube solving solution guide. It was written in 1981 by 13-year-old Patrick Bossert. It sold over more than 1.5 million copies. 

3. The largest NxNxN Cube 

The twisty cube designs are pushing the limits of the big NxN cubes. The largest NxNxN Cube is the 33x33x33 Cube made by Greg’s Puzzles. It contains 6153 3D printed parts!

4. Moves required to speed solve

The most interesting Speed Cube fact is that it does not really take a whole month or endless moves for speedcubers to complete the moves. In fact, it has been declared that the puzzle can be solved in less than 20 moves in total! 

5. The first-ever speed cube competition

Back in 1982, people began competing for the best solve time for a cube. The first-ever world championship was held in Budapest, and the winner was Minh Thai from the United States with a solve time of 22.95 seconds!

6. Speed Cubing world record

The record for the fastest Rubik’s cube solve is currently at 3.47 seconds held by Yusheng Du, who beat the previous record by 0.75 seconds. 

7. The world’s largest and smallest speed cubes

The largest Cube in the world, made by Tony Fisher, weighs around 100Kg and is 1.56 meters tall. On the other hand, the smallest Cube is just 6mm! 

8. Robots can speedsolve too

The fastest robot to solve a cube is the ‘Sub1Reloaded’ with a solve time of 0.637 seconds. It is built by Albert Beer (Germany) and was demonstrated at the Infineon booth at the electronica trade fair in Munich on November 09, 2016. 

9. Speedcubing

The WCA (World Cube Association) regulates and holds Rubik’s Cube competitions worldwide since 2004 with officials in 70 countries. There are a variety of Rubik’s Cube events like the one-handed blindfold, feet only, fewest moves challenge, etc.

A 27-year-old student won the great prize of the German ‘Who wants to be a millionaire by answering the question ‘How many cubies does the Rubik’s Cube consist of?’

11. God’s number 

A team of researchers in 2010 proved that any scramble could be solved in 20 steps or less. Finding this number, called the God’s Number, has been a huge mathematical mystery for decades. 

12. Cubers won ‘Romania’s Got Talent’ in 2015

Speedcubing can definitely make a good show. This was proved by three speedcubers on the most popular Romanian talent show, which impressed the judges and the audience with an amazing show for weeks in a row! Their impressive moves eliminated singers, dancers, magicians and other performers. 

13. The number of combinations

The Rubik’s Cube has 43 quintillion possible scrambles! If these many cubes were lined up together, it would reach out to 260 light-years, or it could even cover the Earth with 300 layers of Cube! 

14. It can be solved blindfolded

The 3x3x3, 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 blindfolded solves are official competition events. The competitor has to memorize the scramble and then solve the Cube blindfolded. 

15. Rubikcubism

Rubikcubism pixel art is the art of using only Rubik’s Cubes to draw images. The world record with 12,090 Rubik’s Cube Mosaic was built by Josh Chalom in October 2009. It is a 17×8.5 foot depiction of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’.
