- Hi Scarlet, welcome to Vents Magazine! How is 2021 treating you so far?
Hello Vents Magazine! 2021 has been both the worst year of my life, and the best. So I’d say it’s treating me pretty well! Just you know… aside from the pandemic. Thanks for asking!
- You’ve got so much going on right now that it’s difficult to know where to begin! First of all, congratulations on your upcoming debut album, which we understand is very much in the works even as we speak! How does it feel to have reached this point so early on in your musical career?
Thank you so much! It feels really unreal. I didn’t think such an accomplishment would happen so soon. I feel relieved to be on the right path, but a bit nervous because I don’t want to let anyone down. I’ve had a lot of help along the way whether it be emotionally, financially, and even socially helping me to connect and network with some of the people I work with today and I couldn’t ask for more. It feels amazing to reach such a milestone, but until I can really solidify my place and give proper thanks to everyone along the way I’ll keep my excitement at bay.
- Can you give readers an idea of what they can expect when they pick up your freshman album?
I think everyone can expect something unique- but familiar. I feel the songs will do good at opening up peoples musical palettes to other genres of music that has been woven into what will be my first album. Expect a rollercoaster of emotions as well! This album will have you feeling up and down (in a good way).
- Is there an official release date as of yet for your debut album?
I can’t say it’s official, but we are hoping to begin to release songs off the album in May alongside music videos, so the journey will start there!
- Your music is being compared to no less of an industry legend than Aaliyah. How does that comparison set with you?
It is one of the most flattering compliments I’ve ever received, but it’s a little scary. She was amazing and her music stands the tests of time. I’m hoping I can live up to the expectations.
- As a young artist, what sort of perspective do you feel you can bring to the music scene that it might be lacking at the moment?
I feel that although the industry seems to be moving forward BIWOC (black and indengenous women of color) aren’t given the chances to showcase the more vulnerable side to them, and are often pushed into a narrative that sells sex only. Now I’m not saying to get rid of this completely as it can be fun for some women to engage with, but I feel with my music and my background I can show people that we can be sexual, vulnerable, fun, introverted, and everything that other female artists have been able to showcase more freely than we have. I just want to see more people listening to our stories regardless of whether they’re attracted to us physically or not.
- The executive producer on your album is none other than the legendary Aaron Pearce who has been instrumental in producing music for musical artists such as Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Jill Scott and Jennifer Lopez. What has it been like for you to collaborate with Aaron on your first album?
Collaborating with Aaron has been awesome! He’s a total perfectionist, much like I am, when it comes down to music. He knows exactly what points to hit in a song to give it that extra umph that will ensure it success, and all in all he’s a real professional. Working with not only him but with Steven Kirk and YNG1NCE, who have written with/for artists such as BTS and Demi Lovato, has been a super rewarding experience. I learned a lot from being in the room with them, and I hope to be blessed enough to continue working with them and any many others down the road.
- You came on like gangbusters musically on American Idol before opting out to walk your own unique path. Can you talk with us about how that experience has informed you as not only an artist, but also as a person?
That experience taught me many things about reality television, and preparing for high stakes performances. It was a very comfortable experience for me but I noticed a lot of people getting incredibly nervous. Some of which lost their opportunity because of how nervous they were. What I’ve learned from my experience is that nerves are hard to fight but the stronger you are against them the better your performance is. Being able to perform under pressure is a skill many people need to have in order to get into this field, my American Idol experience made me hyper aware of that fact. I’m working very hard to build my confidence by posting and putting myself out there slowly because I don’t ever want to lose a shot at something. But even if I do, it’ll be okay. You just gotta keep pushing and one day something will stick.
- What sorts of music have inspired your own style? Do you have any favorites?
Rock music has inspired me a lot actually! As a kid my grandpa forced me to listen to rock with him and at first I wasn’t a big fan. Over time it really grew on me and the aspects of being a ‘rock star’ were the things that made me … me. I always present myself, whether I feel high or low, as someone high energy, confident, and cool. That’s why rock is my favorite, it’s just so easy to lose yourself in the music, and that whole scene has helped me to let go on stage, and in the booth.
- Are there any artists out there that you would like to collaborate with musically?
Yes! BTS. I’ve been mentioning them in every interview so I can plant the seed and hopefully if I make it they’ll notice me.
I love you BTS <3 xoxo, Scarlet
- You’ve also got a television series in development. Can you talk a little bit about what the series is about and who your character is in it?
I am actually not doing that anymore haha! Sorry for the confusion, it just wasn’t for me so I made a clean break from it.
- Is acting something that you would like to juggle in conjunction with your music?
I’m not opposed to it, but I would much rather be a script writer and producer seeing as I tend to write scripts a lot for short stories of mine, and have a book that I’m writing which I hope to adapt into an animated series someday!
- How does your family feel about all of your success?
My grandmother is very excited seeing as she’s really been the one pushing me (not against my will) all these years, and my grandfather is happy because he’s just a happy dude. My moms pretty nervous, and my dads dead. So! Good vibes all around (except for my dad, R.I.P Boo Boo).
- Touring has always been considered one of the chief platforms to spread the word about an artist’s music. How has the worldwide pandemic altered your own touring schedule?
Honestly? I got lucky. I had just split from a band a few months prior to the shut down and was planning on writing and producing and getting my demos out there (it worked! i have a management team now, yay!) this pandemic has just been filled with writing and preparing to get out there once everything is safe again! But I’m really excited to perform once I can!
- Final – SILLY – Question: Driving down an empty two-lane road on a hot summer’s day, which albums would you probably be blasting from your car speaker?
Hmm… I cannot drive! But I would probably play collide with the sky, by Pierce The Veil, MOTS Persona (not an album but shhh) and Hot Pink! By Doja Cat 🙂
