“I feel like women deserve to express their sexuality. We’re often shown to shut down parts of ourselves to appease society, but it’s damaging to repress parts of ourselves that make us whole. We should be free to express our mind, body, and soul.” CoolieMonae
Born in Barbados, CoolieMonae moved to Toronto at a young age. Culture shock only worsened her experiences of discrimination against her background, accent, appearance, and skin color. Still recovering from traumatic experiences, the talented hip-hop artist is reclaiming her goddess power through sex anthems. Have reincarnated from life’s downside, CoolieMonae debuted the single “Top of My Game” in 2019. However, the song almost put her life in danger.
It was CoolieMonae’s very first recording session. She settled herself in the studio and started singing into a mic. She didn’t think twice when the nice people from the recording studio offered her something to drink. CoolieMonae wasn’t so thirsty that day, but still, she took a sip. Soon after, she began to feel dizzy and noticed that her vision became blurry. She soldiered on despite the minor discomfort.
It’s horrifying to think what could have happened to her, but luckily, CoolieMonae was able to remove herself from that situation without harm. From the scary stories parents used to warn us, we know from an early age the world isn’t made of candies and fairytales. Gender and racial related crimes are happening as we talk and eat.
Nearly two-thirds of more than 300,000 women working in the music industry reported having been sexually harassed (Musicians Union, 2018). Around 35% of black women experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime (NISVS). 49% of Black women don’t feel safe walking alone at night in their community (Gallup, 2021).
Women are often judged by the way they choose to present themselves. A fashion show in Poland that displayed the clothes victims were wearing during sexual assaults showed no connection between a woman’s dressing choice and sexual assault cases. What happened and could have happened to CoolieMonae could happen to any woman.
Not being put down by incidents and criticism, the artist’s spirit is high when it comes to music, “People like seeing me down and out, but I always bounce back. That’s my inspiration. I’m willing to fight for what I deserve. It (Top of My Game) was the first song I recorded with just myself. It was my baby, and it sets the tone for my other songs. It’s like my personal anthem,” said Monae, “I have a calling to express myself. My strength comes from within.”
The artist is fighting for sexual freedom with sex anthems: “I feel like women deserve to express their sexuality. We’re often shown to shut down parts of ourselves to appease society, but it’s damaging to repress parts of ourselves that make us whole. We should be free to express our mind, body, and soul,” said CoolieMonae.
Our society still has a long way to go when it comes to female sexuality. Women have the right to express their sexuality, and they deserve to do so without fear. Their contribution and talent are worthy of recognition.
