In the 21st Century there just seems to be no way around it: If you’re an actor with even just one project credit to your IMDb page, then inevitably your path is bound to cross with that of either DC’s or Marvel Comic’s extremely popular cinematic universes. No thespian, be they writ large on the marque at your local movie house or tagged on almost as an afterthought in teeny-tiny script at the tail-end of a mile long credit list at the end of a movie or television project, is safe from the all-consuming clutches of cosmic threats and muscled spandex union suits. Don’t think it can happen to you after your celebrated season of Shakespeare in the Park? Kenneth Branagh, Russel Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Joaquin Phoenix – four of the more celebrated actors of their times – would like a word with you, post haste. And the few acting holdouts that still walk free among us (looking at you here Leonardo DiCaprio and Saoirse Ronan) are nervously looking over their shoulders and at their bank accounts lest they be unceremoniously snatched up by the nigh omnipotent creative powers of Gardner Fox, Roy Thomas, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In other words kiddies, the old bromide of “the play’s the thing” has fallen into disrepair, replaced and embraced wholeheartedly with the twin rallying cries of “Make mine Marvel!” and “The New DC – There’s No Stopping Us Now!”
Word ‘round campfire today from our Adventure Comics-reading compatriots at Variety informs us that no less of an acting stalwart than Olivia Colman (The Crown, Fleabag, The Iron Lady) might just be joining the ranks of the Marvel Universe in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
Secret Invasion is based off of the 2008 Marvel miniseries of the same name written by super-scribe Brian Michael Bendis and it deals with an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-like scenario where the heroes of the Marvel Universe are infiltrated by an alien shape-shifting race called the Skrulls (originally introduced back in the early 1960s by Kirby and Lee).
Colman, according to sources, is deep into negotiations to join a cast that already includes the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn and Kingsley Ben-Adir. Secret Invasion will be premiering on the heels of hot watercooler show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which has broken streaming records even as it expands upon and enriches the mythology of the MCU and Captain America.
So, what’s the moral of the story if you’re an actor? You can run, but you can’t hide? All this intrepid Clark Kent/Peter Parker wannabe knows is that with the possible addition of classy Olivia Colman to the Mighty Marvel ranks, infiltration of the world of cinema by the world of comic books is closer than ever; Quite apt for a series called Secret Invasion, no?
