5 Risks of Unclean Air Ducts

Despite the fact that air ducts are a fundamental part of any property’s air conditioning system, they are often forgotten about and neglected by homeowners and tenants. They seem to be left in the dark and the majority of people only realize that they must be cleaned and well-maintained when it’s too late. Dirty ducts can not only cause your whole HVAC system to fail but they also hide a range of threats and risks for human health.

While some rely on yearly inspections and cleaning from a certified duct cleaning company, others choose to handle the cleaning themselves. Regardless of your preferences, one thing is a fact – your air ducts do require regular upkeep. Let’s look at the top risks associated with unclean air ducts to see why.

Poor air quality

One of the first reasons to consider regular air duct inspections and cleaning is to protect yourself and your loved ones against potential health conditions. Breathing in filthy air as a result of obstructed or dusty air ducts may severely impact your body. Allergens and pollutants are meant to be trapped by air ducts but if they’re not in top condition, this may not be possible. As a result, dirt, grime, and dust will be flowing around in your living or working space.

Higher utility bills

There’s also a financial consequence of poorly maintaining your air ducts. Cleaning them on time will allow you to dramatically reduce your energy consumption, leading to lower utility bills at the end of the month. However, obstructions from dirt particles, allergens, dust, and other debris can force the HVAC system to work harder to produce the same results as when cleaned. The efficiency of the air conditioning system will be compromised, meaning larger monthly expenses for you and your family or co-workers.

Poor airflow

The main objective of your HVAC system is to keep you comfortable during every season. It offers a nice fresh and cold air stream during the summer, which helps you cool down while its warmth during the winter makes you feel cosy and protected. To achieve this, the HVAC system needs maximum airflow circulation through the vents. Dirty air ducts can prevent your air conditioning system from working with maximum airflow and can actually lower it down to its minimum as a result of clogging and blockages.

Higher carbon monoxide threats

Carbon monoxide is certainly not something you want to have an excess of in your home. The odourless and colourless gas can result in memory problems, difficulty concentrating, vision and hearing loss, or even fatal poisoning. In other words, it’s a significant risk to your health that should be avoided at all times. Poorly maintained air ducts that haven’t been properly clean increase the chance of carbon monoxide exposure. This is a result of the overheating of the air conditioner, triggering higher carbon monoxide levels.

Limit switch damage

Keeping your air ducts clean also has an impact on the limit switch as they protect it and ensure it works properly, without malfunctions. Dirt air ducts, on the other hand, can cause the system to clog up and threaten the limit switch. The limit switch has two main roles. It supports the blower to get rid of extra heat from the heat exchanger and it also stops the system in case of overheating.

To avoid all of the above undesirable scenarios related to dirty air ducts, make sure your HVAC system is regularly cleaned and inspected. You could do this alone but if you want to save time and get better results, rely on the help of a duct cleaning professional.
