HOME ECONOMICS - Starring and executive produced by Topher Grace, ÒHome EconomicsÓ takes a look at the heartwarming yet super uncomfortable and sometimes frustrating relationship between three adult siblings: one in the 1%, one middle-class and one barely holding on. The comedy is inspired by the life of writer and executive producer Michael Colton. (ABC/Temma Hankin) TOPHER GRACE

Will Topher Grace Find Success With His Sitcom Return?

These days, I feel like I am less and less aware of what’s new in the world of network television. I managed to catch that Mr. Mayor was coming out, but I heard that Tina Fey had a new show starring Ted Danson and made sure to stay on top of that. Back in the day, I paid attention to the new fall schedules and when new shows were debuting. I made sure to watch the shows I was interested in. Like, when they aired. I still watch some things when they air, and not just sports. However, I have definitely slipped. I never watch late night shows when they air anymore. I increasingly catch sitcoms or dramas after the fact when I stream them. This is why I only found out that there is a new sitcom coming to ABC that stars Topher Grace.

To be fair, I’ve mostly been an NBC and FOX man in my time. I don’t recall the last CBS show I watched. The same is true for ABC, honestly. I’ve never really gotten into any of their recent sitcoms, and I don’t watch any of their dramas. Thus, I was not aware of Home Economics, a show about three siblings in different financial situations. Grace is playing the middle child, and also the sibling who is having a middling career. Apparently the youngest sibling is playing by some YouTube guy. The show was created by two dudes who I remember as talking heads on VH1 back in the day. That’s fun.

I don’t know if I will watch the show, but I was intrigued when I heard about it. That’s mostly because of Grace. I don’t love him as an actor, but I like him, and it’s interesting to see him returning to starring in a sitcom. I grew up watching That ‘70s Show, which he was ostensibly the star of. I watched Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher becomes stars. I remember when Laura Prepon popped up on that Chelsea Handler sitcom. This is even further down the line. Last I saw of Grace he was playing a small role in Under the Silver Lake. He mostly seems to be remembered in the last couple decades for recutting the Star Wars prequels and apparently doing a good job.

Will this be Grace’s return to sitcom stardom? Perhaps, or maybe most people haven’t heard about this show like me. Do ABC sitcoms succeed by and large? I hope Home Economics does well. If it does, Grace will have a second act in sitcom life. As I get older, and watch network shows less, that still strikes a chord with me.
