Do you know that your room air conditioner comes with air filters just like an air purifier. Indoor and outdoor air quality is crucial for our health. But can your AC purify your room air.
This post is specific for air filters used in split or window AC. Air filters vary in the case of central or HVAC systems.
Use of Air Filters in AC
There are several types of room air conditioners namely window, split, portable AC. Each uses some type of air filter. There are many types of air filters designed for different purposes.
But in the case of AC, the first priority is to protect the insides of it from dust, pollen. These particles can clog the coiling and thus reduce the cooling efficiency.
The dust particles can accumulate in the evaporator coil, this will reduce the room air circulation with the evaporator coil and the AC will need to do more work to achieve the same cooling ultimately leading to increased power consumption.

Types of Air Filters
1. Dust Filter
This is the most common type of air filter and is available in every room AC. Its basic function is to collect and filter dust, pollen from the room air.
This leads to purifying of room air and protection of evaporator coils from dust.
It is washable in nature and needs to be cleaned periodically as it gets easily clogged with dust.
If not cleaned with time it will get clogged with dust, this will restrict the airflow and the cooling efficiency of your AC will go down, then you will complain about low cooling and higher electricity bills.
2. Anti Bacterial Filter
This air filter is similar to that of a dust filter and adds on the feature of removing bacteria and harmful irritants from the air.
It can trap airborne contaminants like pollen, spores, bacteria. This filter is marketed by different names by brands.
Voltas call it the Acaro Bacterium filter and Carrier call it the Biofilter.
3. HEPA Filter
This is the most important filter in an air purifier.
It can remove 99% of all airborne particles as small as 0.3 μm. This includes PM2.5 and PM10 particles which are the major culprits in air pollution.
In the room air conditioners, only a small strip of HEPA filter can be used as it restricts airflow. This filter in AC cannot purify air similarly like a room purifier.
However, it helps in air purification to some degree.
4. Catechin Filter
Available in only a few selected models of AC like Panasonic, Mitsubishi, etc.
This filter has antibacterial and antiviral properties. It is made from an extract of green tea leaves.
It can remove odor-causing pollutants like smoke in the air.
