INTERVIEW: Carter Tanton

Hi Carter, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Doing good, how about you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Uneven High Places”?

It happened fast one morning, I wanted to make something which channeled early Cat Power records.

Did any event in parIcular inspire you to write this song?

Not exactly, perhaps just a frustraIon with digital recording made me want to do something so simple.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Video was amazing, we used a crane and shot on film.

The single comes off your new self-Itled album – why naming the album aQer yourself?

Because it’s so stripped down and revealing, nothing to hide behind.

How was the recording and wriIng process?

Easy once it finally found it’s fooIng.

What role does BalImore play in your music?

I grew up in the city, raised by people who worked in and for the city – it’s always there, whether I’m abroad or living in other places. It’s not a city which allows for a lot of “fluff”.

You are known for some great collaboraIons – do you tend to take a different approach when collaboraIng with someone else rather than working on your own?

Yeah, of course. My own songwriIng is done in isolaIon following a thread which began when I was 13. CollaboraIon is more freewheeling and my role is to help whichever way suits the song.

What aspect of society and life in general did you get to explore on this record?

Interiority

Where did you find the inspiraIon for the songs and lyrics?

I don’t know…back then I was reading a lot of minimal writers from the 70’s like Amy Hempel and Joy Williams, very evocaIve ellipIcal writers.

What else is happening next in Carter Tanton’s world?

Laying low, things are good.
