Grammy nominated producer/creator boyband has released his newest single “fooly cooly” via Dirty Hit, alongside a vibrant music video that captures the spacious and abstract aesthetic of the anime that inspired it – CLICK HERE to listen to the single, which was produced by Omer Fedi (Iann Dior, Machine Gun Kelly, Yungblud) and KC Supreme (Trevor Daniel, Internet Money, Poorstacy) and CLICK HERE to watch the corresponding video.
Highlighting the personality, mentality and psyche of Mamimi Samejima, adespondent and troubled character from Kazuya Tsurumaki’s FLCL series, boyband uses the emotionally charged “fooly cooly” as a platform to highlight the complicated feelings are associated with growing up. Zooming in on the intricate details of her character arch, the song navigates Samejima’s depression and the manner in which she shoulders the heartbreakshe frequents from her toxic home life and the rejection she feels when her ex-boyfriend Tasuku Nandaba, abandons her to chase his dreams of professional baseball.
“fooly cooly” isn’t the first instance in which anime has stirred boyband’s creativity. The new single joins the previously released track “death note” (feat. Billy Martin of Good Charlotte), which was influenced by the 37-episode anime series and manga series of the same name. Like the art that inspired it, “fooly cooly” and “death note” rely on deeply-profound storytelling to expand and normalize the conversation surrounding the trouble spots in society that teens are experiencing today.
Using his emotionally charged, 10-track project alone in a boyband, which includes “tattoo,” “realtree,” and “big face” (ft. Mike Kinsella) to speak candidly about the intense experiences of indifference, despondency, and social fatigue often felt by young adults, boyband has earned the trust of his listeners. These intimate and unique connections to his fans have allowed him to create a community-like platform through his music, where fans can bond, commiserate and embrace togetherness as they transition from teenagers to independent adults.
boyband is hopeful that his career can inspire others to never give up.
